4 Series BMW 4-Series Coupe Concept

The BMW 4 Series is a range of compact executive cars manufactured by BMW since 2013. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series.
Production version ... Forget all the Concept kitsch (door handles, side mirrors, fancy wheels, overdone chrome detailing on kidney grille, rear bumper with overdone rear diffuser & exhaust, front bumper with overdone air intake detailing, overdecorated air breather ... Forget futuristic light graphics, forget the overdone interior leather details etc.

Sure Individual will offer some great leather choices & colors, some fancy wheels etc, special body colors etc later on ...

Full-LED headlights will be an optional feature ... introduced later, not initially @ launch ... I guess with the GranCoupe or M4 Coupe. Don't expect a miracle though! Look @ 6er, 5er LCI, new X5 for a clue.

Rear lights will have the 3er-like graphics (the twin LED L-strips), so will the Halogen & the Xenon headlights.

The interior itself is more or less 3er carbon copy with some extra trim, and some different trim location (eg. on side panels etc).

The light graphics on 4er Coupe Concept show future design solutions (LED projectors with angular LED Coronas feat. extension bar towards the grille; rear lights with 3D single loop LED "Lava Lamp") on upcoming BMWs, not necessarily on 4er first! ;)

A variation on the concept wheels ie a more production reality style will feature , LEDs will be optional . Otherwise the concept car is 90% the car we will see soon. Like the 2er I do not think photographers have scooped an LED equipped car yet.

The rust issue was an example of Internet related paranoia. There was no allowance for BMW to discover whether it was isolated or a major issue. But word soon spread and there was no time to allow BMW to offer a complete investigation.
I am still at a lost why someone on one BMW enthusiast site decided to send via twitter in order to affect BMW's stock price?
An investigation into the rust issue that would not only involve suppliers but also affecting production.
Paranoia convinced one such owner to destroy his car because he felt there was no action when truth be told no one had any iota what was happening. They have now investigated and have a solution and that will be passed to customers and production.

This forum is to be lauded for the attention it brought to the rust issues in new BMWs. It is unacceptable for a Premium carmaker like BMW to have rust problems in new cars.

In particular Giannis is to be congratulated for highlighting this issue.

^haha no no it was internet related paranoia..and without that BMW would have fixed it themselves..

I mean aren't we all here to see rising stock prices.. who cares about good products?..

Don't you ever mess with the stock prices!!!

;)

IMO the "internet paranoia" regarding the rust issue was even too mild. It should had been even more severe & intense. Since rust in a cabin of a premium car is A NO GO! No matter what's the cause for the rust (cleaning agent), no matter where the rust is located (on unexposed parts), and not matter whether the rust is just superficial or already eating into the metal. It's just A NO GO. Not only in a material way but even more when the brand image is in question.

I'm doing in BMW's favor ... the sooner they address the issue the better for the company in the mid-term & long-term run. Imagine the impact of the issue after several years of not addressing the issue at all - the damage would be even greater & much more devastating.

I feel sorry for all the owners who have to fight this battle directly @ the dealerships ... waiting desperately for the right solution to be introduced how to fix an existing rust issue.

As said: the new cars (the unpainted metal parts in the cabin) have now been treated (from late November 2012 on) with different cleaning agent that doesn't cause "superficial corrosion". But the bigger issue & challenge is how to fix the parts already affected by corrosion.

OK, back to 4er ... :)

On the contrary, you should be ashamed of yourself.

The bolded cars don't even exist....o_O

BMWBLOG: Did those extra-vents help air flow over the wheel? Or they were more aesthetic?

Won Kyu Kang: These ones are here for the lightweight, not for the airflow.
Can someone explain to me what the designer means by "For the lightweight" ?

^Does he mean that the metal removed to replace with the plastic vent is some kind of weight save?:cautious:

Check the whole interview again. :) They are talking about wheels, and wheel design ... so the "extra-vents" they talk about are actually these holes:

2013-naias-bmw-4-series-481-655x435.webp

which are there for the weight reduction purposes, not for aesthetic or aerodynamic ones.

(y)

They don't talk about the air-breathers (side vents) in this particular case ... They discussed about them earlier on in the interview. Check it again. :)

So the best of the car won't make it to production...
hah, I do consider me and my family as big and loyal customers(not only) to BMW and if this car looks just like a 3er coupe and "maybe" have rust issues then... I really hope Jag comes with a 4er competitor soon and will be more than happy if other customers do the same as me and change the brand :) The Production 4er and then M4 should be Phenomenal the least to keep me loyal!

Well, the basic shape of the car is wonderful, but I hope they keep some of the eye candy...

Indeed Doc. And this time they must listen;) The 4er has so much going for it, BMW could really do well here. The chassis is already a true BMW jewel (again) and the styling is IMO out of this world!

Boomerang-shaped Air-breather is staying. :D

Seriously ... Don't expect concept-like eye candies ... At least not initially.

Optional LEDs will be introduced later (I guess with GC or even M4 launch) ... While new tail light graphics will probably have to wait till LCI. IMHO the first car with those two funky-looking features will probably be the new 7er.

What it sets this car from regular 3er sedan - or from being "just" a 3er coupe - are the dimensions & proportions. Wider, lower, a bit longer ... The whole stance is different. Much more 6er-like. Yet still the design is heavily based on 3er: interior is almost a carbon copy of 3er's interior ... And the exterior details are very much in line with 3er design. It's not like 5er vs 6er case. It's more like current X5 vs current X6.

Do we know how much different it will be compared to the 3er in terms of options offered?

I'm replacing my E92 320d next year and am considering either a 640d or a 435d. I think the 4-Series will be better for someone younger but I really like the options available on the 6-Series (B&O, LED Lights, Nappa leather, Pana roof etc) will these also be available on the 4-Series, as I would like to have those on there as a minimum.

What are those "funky-looking" features? Door handles? I like them.

I agree, 4er/M4 needs B&O, full-LEDs, full-leather.
