BMW 1-Series Coupe Official Press Release

What is BMW's capacity to ramp up production on this? I have a feeling that demand is going to well exceed their (conservative) sales target of 30,000 in the US.

Notice how the grille is different? And the whole front for that matter? The lights are the only thing that is the same

Just wait and sleep a night over it. I am sure you'll like it a lot more tomorrow. Just soak up those lines and let it settle for a night ;)

The pictures of the coupe we've seen so far shares the same grille as the hatch without the Msport package... i think they'll put the same grille on the hatch Msport soon...

I read the german pressrelese and it appears the car (135i/123d) has some kind of diff, LSD. Makes me wonder why 335i doesnt have this? :t-hands:

1560kg holy mother god. Are you 100 procent certain.

That s heavy. That s 110kg more than a 3 door hatch 130i

If bmw plans an M1 they rather can pick the hatch to make one. It s a nice car in looks the coupe. But 1560kg is to heavy for a fun car in my book.

Yes that s EU weight. 1560kg 135i and 1450kg 130i 3 door.

that s with driver and luggage and some petrol that s still 110kg difference between the two.

Yes, it is a kind of electronic "differential lock" - not mechanical one. Meaning the electronic systems like DSC, ABS etc are programmed that in a certain situation simulate actions of differential lock.

Something similar like EDL function in VW Golf GTI.

Why in 1er coupe? To make it most fun-to-drive BMW non-M model - to revive 2002's driving feeling.

Mind that 1er coupe is a spiritual successor of 2002. While 3er is pushed further up-market.

I'm sure that in not so distant future also some other BMW models will get differential lock system - yet not "EDL", but a DPC system. :t-cheers:

N54 engine alone is about 30kg heavier than N53 engine. Than add bigger tires, bigger brakes, M-suspension, longer body (+13cm), and since nose is heavier they had to make rear also heavier to maintain 50:50 weight distribution, ...

Eg. 120d has almost identical weight figure in both body variants: 3dr hatch (1,440kg) vs 2dr coupe (1,450kg).

EnI...when is that 2.0T petrol engine coming? Or is it not coming after all?

According to my info it is still in development. Yet I have no idea when exactly when it will be available. There was an indication the engine will be offered with E82 launch - yet this is not the case.

I can see BMW changed plans and offered 123d first - since I guess diesel variant (I4 twin-turbo with over 200PS) is going to sell way better than similar petrol version. Also the decision to bring 135i is also a key factor - I4 twin-turbo petrol could eat too much of 135i sales.

Look it from marketing point of view: 123d M-sport vs Golf GTI. Performance petrol engine vs. performance diesel engine.

It is funny how Audi claim they have produced "ultimate performance diesel engine" - the ultra-heavy V12 TDI, while BMW is offering real world performance diesel engines that are broadly available: 3.0L I6 VTT with 286HP, and now 2.0L I4 VTT with 204HP.

Hm...:eusa_thin ...difficult comparison EnI. On one hand you have a diesel engine that revs less than a petrol engine...and on the other hand you have a petrol turbo engine that revs from 2,000 all the way to 7,000 rpm.

However, if you ask me, I would not want a turbo engine for ANY BMW cars. BMW is one of the only companies remaining that have retained naturally aspirated engines. Alfa Romeo has also, but from next year they are going turbo also with a 1.8 JTB engine.

At least the BMW 3.0 twin stage turbo engine is a masterpiece...like BMW always does...but since I am a petrolhead...I would want BMW to stay with N/A engines. :t-cheers:

3.5 turbo is a master piece but a turbo 6 is to nose heavy compared to the 3.0 NA alu mag engine. For the autobahn burners the perfect engine but for nice handling and cornering i rather have the lighter N/A one. Or a 4 cil turbo with 280hp is also fine by me. Evo s en subs have that to so that should be no problem for bmw to make also.

Does the 3.0 NA engine 272hp comes available for this car. That would be my choice for the coupe without a doubt.

It's only 30 kg more...that's not much imo for added torque and hp

I know, but I don't think the 1er hatch is going to change anymore. This is it.

I like the overall design very much, it'll really appeal to a younger target group I think. But unfortunately, I don't like the shape of those rear lights... :eusa_doh: With some edgier rear lights instead of those L-shaped curved ones the back would have looked so much nicer, IMO. Such a disappointment, I expected something much better from BMW. It just looks weird to me
I'm sure it will be a true driver's car though.
