I agree with you Marcus. I think what really sets the Mulsanne apart from its competitors is authenticity, its connection to history and the clear self-assurance of its purpose.
The Rolls-Royces are wonderful ......but they don't feel as genuine (because we all know that BMW's Rolls-Royce is almost entirely a fantasy with virtually no connection to history apart from its iconic name .....heavily reliant on marketting, brand perception, and pastiche)
Maybach/Mercedes-Maybach does have pedigree and authenticity because it is historically connected with Mercedes' history ......but it lacks character and a real sense of purpose .....apart from responding to a market segment.
The Mulsanne probably doesn't make much sense on paper .....I'm sure there are accountants at VW who scratch their heads as to why the Mulsanne even exists. I'm glad it does exist because it is unique and special. I love how the car fans at this forum understand the Mulsanne and don't just write it off as an snobbish "old mans" car ......because they understand it is much greater than that.
I do not have the %GP stats on VAG's Bentley Cars division. That said if the growth in this upper-luxury segment in recent years especially China and the Middle-East as an indicator IMO both VAG and the BMW Group must makes a profit on these ultra-expensive cars. I can't imagine the VAG bean counters will allow for another Bugatti scenario.
