Autocar drives the 730d and

Yes ... 300 and the list is growing .. and people still have no clue about the pricing

Interesting. The car gets top marks in every respect -- except the noise.

Funny, given the S class' reputation for quietness, I'd have thought this would have been a priority for BMW with the 7er.

No top marks for noise and ride qaulity Rob. ;) And expect the S face lift to move its ride quality even further on.

The noise has to be a pre-production car glitch, no way BMW missed a standard luxury car trait, quietness.

Gotta see this car in person because from the A-pillar foward it looks a huge, ungainly mess in pictures.

I have no idea what Autocar guys have driven ....

Because ... AutoZeitung eg. praised driving comfort & soundproofness of the new 7er. Incl. to the wind noise.

"Wind noise is reduced to minimum."

I'm pretty sure that's got to be a pre-series press car or something. These cars are supposed to very very quiet. I cannot hear anything outside when I'm in a diesel X5 driving through a factory (which is obviously a loud environment) so I'm sure a newer 7er would be even quieter.

It's very very rare to hear a journalist complain about road noise in any german car

What do they say?

It is obvious that Autocar drove a 7-Series BMW with a glitch. Now I know we'll pretend that can't possibly happen.

It must be said -- the Beemer is much more eye catching (however, that might be beacuse it is new) -- can't wait to see what Merc does with the next S.

It is possible but is definitely not acceptable. These press cars are usually combed over to make sure that these things don't happen. However, I'd like to know what they are talking about:
- is it the engine noise? If so that is odd since that diesel engine has always done well
- windnoise? very possible. You'd be shocked at how easy it is to get windnoise.. could be an area that is not sealed, the size of half a penny and you'll get something very annoying.
- tire noise?

it's interesting for me because i used to be an acoustic engineer/intern for BMW and they were sticklers when it came to these kinds of things... and that was for the "lowly" E90 :)

OT: What the hell are you guys doing still up this late on a Sunday night -> Directed towards the Europeans and guys in that area :D

Real nice, a SWB S-Class photographed next to a LWB 7-Series.

I've told you F01 was very formidable & oozing huge presence ...
