I expected Q7 sales to be higher. I'm impressed that Bentley sold more cars and generated more revenue than Lamborghini. The reason is probably that Revuelto sales are still ramping up and the Hurecan is at the end of its life.

More revenue yet way less profit. I don't think they care.
Also, Bentley lineup basically means the Conti GT, which is vastly cheaper than the average Lambo.

No point in the e-Tron GT getting a successor anyways since the A6 e-Tron will be larger, have more range, and be lower priced which is what most Audi customers are looking for. A8 e-Tron will take the flagship role by ~ 2027 when the e-Tron GT ends production. And ofc Audi has hinted at an EV coupe to succeed the TT/R8 as the "halo" coupe model in the future.

The other thing is why spend money on an E-tron GT when it's the platform as the Taycan and the Taycan is just better.

Basically. Audi, being part of VAG, will always face the same challenge. Why buy an R8 rather than a Lambo, why get the e-tron GT when the Taycan has much more sex-apeal. Not sure even if a new A8 makes any sense either. People have a strong preference for its competitors.

The argument for the R8 was that it had a V10, and was less ostentatious as a Lambo and more unique than a Porsche.

The E-tron GT is literally just a rebadged Taycan, but without the badge prestige.

And what exactly would have been different for a new gen based on the next gen Huracan? Other than a V10 which the Lambo won't have either? That's right, nothing* would be different.

What is actually different is the prospective buyers compared to 15-20 years ago. 'Normal' people rather have a high end SUV than a supercar/sportscar. And rich people don't want an Audi. That's what has actually changed, and this is the sole demise of the R8
Audi bought Lamborghini in 1998. It was a completely different world back then. Fun fact: the first modern SUV came in 1999, a year later. The BMW X5.

*) if we for the moment forget CO2 emissions, electrification and all that

As someone who has been in both these positions, I can give you my thoughts.

R8 V10 over a Lamborghini Gallardo in 2011.
  • Much higher purchase price and running costs of the Gallardo
  • More convenient servicing nearby for my R8 than the Lambo.
  • Questionable image of the Lambo compared with the R8. Having driven a Gallardo over three days and 500 miles, I was quite happy to give it back due to the attention it draws. The R8, on the other hand, does that rare thing of being exotic without being *too* exotic, and attracting attention without it being *too* much attention. It also managed to be desirable despite being part of a mainstream, mass-market brand.

Taycan over an e-tron GT in 2022.
  • Taycan is better looking
  • Porsche is an aspirational brand where as Audi (as a brand) is not.
  • Can't comment on the drive as I've never driven an e-tron GT. Once I'd driven the Taycan I wasn't interested in buying any other car.

Porsche have the enviable luxury of being a brand that has Motorsports and driving pedigree that gives it more apparent class than something like Lamborghini's which are very obviously ostentatious.
It's the brand that can have it's cake and eat it too.
So an Audi can be more desirable than Lambo because it's less showy, but Porsche can be more desirable than everything because it's got the right balance of showy, but not too showy.

Really no other brand has this. Maybe the AMG GT? But even that falls far short of a Porsche.

Well, hard to argue with any of this, I would have done the same in both cases.

I see the first R8 trully as a one-off. Can’t see how Audi will ever be able to succeed again going that upmarket.

Personally I think the e-Tron GT is more showy/stylish than the Taycan, but the Taycan definitely has much more brand cachet, but also lower priced models and more body styles to make more sales.

e-Tron GT should've been significantly cheaper instead of similarly priced to sell better.

Updated E-tron is coming next year with Porsche tech.

Also rumors talk about +1000hp E-tron GT RS.

I have to ask - do you still own your R8 V10?
I remember you've said you plan to keep it for a long time.

Speaking of servicing, how much is a typical, yearly service?

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
