Why just the designer? What about everyone who signed off on it? I can see one guy getting it wrong, but it is amazing how a whole team, group, division, company, board can get it so wrong! Didn't even one soul have the balls to stand up and say that there is something fundamentally wrong with that face.
It's funny but one of my co-workers loves the look of the new 1er, thinks its more manly looking than the previous one and he drives a new A5. The real ticket will be how well the S3 resists understeer, if it does that then it stands a good chance at being quite enjoyable, I feel that's what makes the S4 such a pleasure.

Yes, that is exactly what I have been wondering since the day one I saw this car. I mean, I can understand makes like Kia or Fiat, experimenting with the design, and taking risks. But BMW?? I will never get that. Not with such an incredibly ugly car.

No matter how ugly the new 1er is (yeah it is), still wouldn't think twice when I had to choose between that or a generic VAG product.
The ride will be so much superior.
Lol, like you'll be seeing anything of the uglyness when you're driving the car....1er will undoubtedly bring more joy when driving. And that's what's it all about ultimately. 1er really drives fantastic, and no Audi brings this, period. The A3? LOL, please!

Sunny, don't complain that much. At least for you bimmer fans is just the 1er. For many of us Merc fans, there is the A, B, GLK, SL, SLK, CLS, CLA and counting, to be hited by the ugly stick. To have one ugly car "passed" all the good taste police is possible, but half a line up? And we're talking about the entry level car (1er), in Mercedes case it goes up to the SL!!!! God, have mercy on us!

Haha, yea I do feel for you Merc guys, MB design really seems out to sea these days. What they need is a strong guy at the top who has the balls to say, "this is Mercedes, we been doing this longer than anyone else, we don't have to go chasing every latest fad". Having said, that I don't think any of the cars you listed with probably the exception of SLK is down right questionable like the 1er. I actually quite like the CLS - as long as I don't see the rear.

I dont think 1er have pretty face but the car looks better IRL than photos. Xeon lights, M-package and Estorilblue color improve the car a lot. With the right combination its not an ugly car but it aint a beauty either. 1-series ia great drive and M135i have gotten only praise so far so I fully understand why people vote for M135i becuase a poll isnt always based only on how the car looks like.
Personally I havent voted yet because I want to know how both cars drives. When it comes down to S3 or M135i, the drive is important. Next Golf R and Seat Cupra and already existing cars like Megane RS, Astra OPC, Ford are cars that also are good to drive and look good. Neither S3 or M135i are the only and obviously choice.

Look I've owned (and still do) some, let's say, unfortunately styled vehicles in my time. So, fortunately for the Bee-Em I place the way it drives way over the way it looks. Y'know what they say, when you're on the inside...
But I'm old and pernickety now, with a penchant for an antiquated way of driving that, truthfully, has no place in the modern world. Yet, for one last blast, for just one more car - the allure of an M135i straight six, RWD and a manual gearbox is as close to motoring nirvana as gets these days. Kudos to BMW and Audi for offering these two fine, fine machines with the option of a manual transmission. Sadly, I expect just one-fifth of them to be snapped up in manual guise and none of them in SA.

You know my opinion, right? And even I voted S3. I could drive a an M135i, fully modded with 19" rims, dark color, tinted windows all round, race exhaust, chipped, lowered, etc... but as they come from factory my pick would be the S3 without any doubt. That tells alot. And then again, many would pick the F2X, but they don't really care about its look, it is a BMW.

And I mean, seriously! Is your hate towards the 1er so strong? Don't you think design is subjective? Don't you think that there may be some people who think it looks ok? Don't you think a true car enthusiast would choose an I6 with RWD over a I4 with AWD?

It is acually alot more simple Dr. Dunkel. Imagine the M135i with 1 Series Active Tourer design. That would be a hell hot looking sportshatch.
