A3/S3/RS3 Audi RS3 (Spy pics & info)

The Audi A3 is a small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by Audi AG since September 1996. The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
2011 sounds like a great time to be changing cars by the looks of it!

My money's on the 1M (literally) but I haven't ruled this one out either.

Shame it's so late in the model's lifecycle.

Are both (1M and RS3) not late in their models' life?

The A3 has been out for so long! 2 face lifts!!! I can't believe Audi are bringing out an RS model so late in life cycle which is what 8-9 years old to date. I would much prefer Audi to use this engine for the next generation A3 and in the new Coupe version. I have an A3 and love it but time for the next one to come out!

Indeed, but the 1er coupe has been out from '07, making 1M four years after introduction of base model with 2 years before replacement whereas A3 sportback will have been out since '05 (?) making it 6 years older with imminent replacement?

I had a deposit down on RS3 years ago when it turned out to be S3 (3dr) so I got my deposit back because I needed 4/5 doors.

Now my deposit is on 1M because circumstances have changed but I will still consider RS3, depends how they both look when specs are finally revealed.

I am also considering Merc C coupe and maybe new baby CLS but not sure if that will come out in time. But I've always wanted M.

The 1M will be a brilliant machine, of this I have no doubt at all and I honestly don't know whether the RS3 will be a/ as good, b/ worse or c/ even better. But one thing for sure, the two will behave completely differently.

It's a limited run but probably has the same transversely mounted 5-cylinder turbo engine as the TT RS, right?

Both will probably have their pros and cons, no doubt. I agree, they will be rather different in terms of execution. Heck, I would love to have both, and if Audi stays true, I don't think I would feel that having both would be a waste.

Yeah. The RS3 for Monday to Friday and the 1M for the weekend.

The perfect combination. :t-cheers:

What is it that makes for your obsession with the M models? :t-hands:

Best regards,
south

Oh come on South, it's a bloody joke, I think you are taking this post and most of my other ones way to serious.

Anyhow what other car is a true competitor to this car, tell me what will we all do when they are launched and the first comparisons between them are posted, just ignore them in case someone starts a debate on the suject?

If it was me standing there with the bag of money, looking for a brand new second car, I would look at the RS3, 1M, Cayman S and Evora S - just from the top of my head...

True, but as a first choice when rear space and a boot are needed then only the RS3 and 1M fit the bill out of that list.

Personally given the choice out of those in your list I wouldn't pick either the RS3 or 1M as a second car as both are more car than I would need and I doubt either will thrill as much as the other two.

I think I would too. But rear and boot space are not issues to all, especially when looking at a second cars of this calibre/type.

The other issue with the Lotus and Porsche are they will be far more expensive to buy and maintain compared to either the Audi or Beemer, the Lotus especially so.

Another thing, we don't have any real experience of how the 1M will compared to either the Porsche or Lotus and we know nothing of the RS3 other than the engine/gearbox combination works well and it's got bags of poke and performance, how it's chassis will perform compared to the S3 is unknown.

Why? The engine and electronics are Toyota sourced. Unless the gas pedal sticks, I can't think of anything that can go wrong :D

Yes, the Lotus could even prove to be hard to get serviced at all. The Porsche, on the other hand, doesn't cost that much to service, given the type of car.

I own an old Lotus and as such I have experience with their dealerships and pricing structure, they are much more expensive to service and repair than either the Beemer or Audi, and are a full £10k+ more than a Cayman S.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
