Quattro/S2 Audi Quattro Concept

Good idea, but in a period when volume growth is limited by factory capacity VAG are looking to boost their profits by increasing the margins. When even things we take for granted in cellphones and tablets such as GPS, don't come standard in cars because of costs then it's unfeasible to introduce performance improvements customers are unwilling to pay a premium for.

I don't agree with the thinking around your statement, Luw.

German car makers have, for too long, milked the optional extras practice. Nav/GPS as an example is exorbitantly priced not because of its cost - that technology is now literally as cheap as chips - but because it is an easy profit generator. Looking at the mass ubiquity of bluetooth, wireless & GPS-based navigation and these costs compared to the cost incurred by Audi to engineer its current and exclusive (A4-upwards) AWD, the move to an improved AWD layout would be justifiable.

Looks so much better in red!!
I still hate the design of these lights. Waaaay to BMWish. (Just as the i8 lights are way to Audish)

Looks spectacular, it really does. Bring it on I say, see if it sells. Who cares if it doesn't, they can start with the next project if that's the case.

Laser tech is very impressive. I assume it works similarly in the production i8?

Audi Sport Quattro could make production as performance GT
Audi's performance-based Sport Quattro concept could be built to sit between the TT and R8 in the firm's model range

The Audi Sport Quattro concept has production potential as a performance GT to sit between the Audi TT and Audi R8 in the firm’s line-up, technical chief Ulrich Hackenberg has revealed at theDetroit motor show.

The Sport Qauttro was seen as a high-performance 690bhp hybrid at the Frankfurt motor show last September, prompting speculation that it would usurp the R8 as Audi’s performance flagship.

But Hackenberg said such a model, if it were to make production, would require a big investment and would need to be built in greater numbers as a result, therefore making it the firm’s mid-range sporting GT makes more sense

The Sport Quattro was as much about showing the versatility of the upcoming new MLB platform, which will underpin all Audi saloons and SUVs bigger from the A4 and Q5 up.

“There are many driveline possibilities for the car,” said Hackenberg. “It has a lot of potential due to the platform, one of them very powerful. If we have a car on the modular system, we can take other drivelines. It has a potential for bigger volume. To make this car requires a big investment, and it makes sense for us to widen its potential.”

In previous years Audi's default FWD configuration has been considered a social handicap they were bullied for. Today, it's their biggest advantage. As showroom run out of floor space for new niche models, and factory output reach their limits, the next source for profitability isn't diversification but cost-cutting. Mercedes and BMW are now probably snarling at Audi's ability to sell FWD A8s and A6 at the same price that they sell, more resource intensive, rear wheel drive cars.

On the flip-side I would hate the future of the luxury industry to be FWD cars that look nice but have primitive chassis. This is why we smaller manufacturers need to remain independent so that innovation can thrive outside the constraints of corporate boards of directors with big brains but no heart.

We are in 2014, yet these car mags, websites, graphic designers kept posting absolute garbage on the internet. Yeah sure absolutely no body will notice they photo shopped the front of the Audi Quattaro concept onto the Nissan GTR.

^
That was the point, how it the looks like (Audi Q C), if it has GT-R's exterior :)

^There's a video on YouTube showing the tech in action, it will benefit both petrol and diesel motors though I reckon diesels will feel the benefit most.

I know but it was quite some time ago that video was released. Good to actually here from VAG that it is happening now.

I take it's relatively the same type of turbo used in their LeMans racer?

I was really hoping it'd be a in-line 5 turbo. Something unique to its segment and that harked back to the original Quattro. Although a turbo V6 would be better than a heavier V8...I guess.

^I honestly would have thought once you include all the turbos, coolers and piping the V8 might actually weigh less, though I reckon the switch will have more to do with its environment and performance benefits.

Same as they did with first Quattro concept.

Putting a tranverse engine in a longitudinal concept is something completely different then putting it in a production car.
Audi is developing a complete new V6 Biturbo engine for longitudinal use, a little brother to the 4.0TFSI V8 engine.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
