Inisghtful footage regarding the creation of a concept.

I'm only beginning to fully appreciate what an utter masterstroke that "divided" upper sideglass element is. Its' interaction with the cars' roof and flank sculpturing effectively allieviate the "Short Bonnet Syndrome".

Wait. This is what Audi will bid against the Mercedes EQS? This looks absolutely gorgeous. And mercedes has that half-egg, half-machine monstrosity? Audi has already won. If only their EV's weren't so damn expensive.

I am amazed at how bad this IAA is, anyone would have thought that with everything that happened they would try a little more, ............disappointing.

BMW - a lot of EV bikes and a shitty concept that is only its interior and that became the star of the brand in the show simply because they did not finish the "Neue Klasse" (Zipse mentions it in the video presentation of the garbage can, "The neue Kasse is not ready" he says), that was announced to be presented here, what a shame..

Mercedes - brought a dozen eggs and gave the G-Class angel eyes

Audi - Magnificent; winner by miles - proving that new technologies can be more beautiful than ever, not only is it a great concept full of new ideas, but beyond looking "dynamic and moving while standing still" it seems an arrow.

Special mentions

1- Maybach concept (nothing too special, but nice and different)
2- The stone of light and colors inside the BMW (StarTrek type)
3- Mercedes presenting various novelties, good and bad but abundant, showing respect for the exhibition and the attending public

Kindly forgive my incessant fawning...:

...but the Grand Sphere is the best thing to have emerged from German manufacturer design studios in quite some while. I can only hope that it will be a highly accurate template for the design of future Audi lower ride height vehicles. The Grand Sphere has seriously swooned me.

I do like it very much, but without a doubt this is as far from production as the EQS concept was.

Audi spokespersons hinting at an "80%" translation into the serial production product. Of course, the remaining "20%" deviation could make a world of difference.

By the way, do you recall M-B spokepersons commenting on the degree of "translation" upon the presentation of the EQS Concept ? I don't remember, I'm afraid.

-100%

If the transfer of the e-tron concept is indicative, we can celebrate in advance

The Grandsphere reminds me of the pleasant impression I still have of the Stoque ...

The eTron GT concept ? That would be absolutely GRAND ! However, Marc Lichte elaborated from the concept presentation onwards that the production eTron GT would be a 95-to-99% reflection of the concept and that the original 2018 L.A. Show presentation car was based on a well-hidden body-in-white FEP pre-production test mule. The roof rails even featured baggage box mounting points-and the door handle mounting cavities were filled and finished.

No such justified, juicy anticipation thus far regarding the Grand Sphere though. We fans can only cross our fingers and...hope.

Best front end on an Audi I can remember.

Can't believe they are considering ruining the production version with the ugly Sky Sphere front end.

I don't recall sorry.

There is so much on this concept that just does not seem production feasible from a design and cost point of view.

As stunning as it is, I am also still a bit perplexed about where Audi is heading in terms of design. This again, like the A6 E tron, seems like a big departure from the E tron GT and makes the GT look positively old hat.

I'm really loving the smooth flanks of the A6 E Tron and Grand Sphere. (Should be we thanking MB sensual purity for bringing back clean surfaces?) But while the front and side views are clearly from the same school, the rears could not be more different.

Still, Audi has delivered two stunning concepts and they really have piqued my interest and set my heart racing, moreso than anything MB and BMW have brought to EV production. Time will tell though if the 'concept' moniker betrays the production reality.

An interesting point.

I do wonder whether the eTron GT will actually be afforded a "standard" shelf-life (model cycle of 6-7 years at most). With all VAG BEV platforms being eventually merged into the SSP electric toolkit (Porsche featuring a brand-only derivative), the current J1-based eTron GT may not be a sustainable foundation regarding Audis' future design language. As the production A6 eTron and Grand Sphere (aka A8 or A9 eTron) may be underpinned by the SSP toolkit (hence bypassing the PPE designation) and especially the A6 eTron being a higher unit volume entry, these cars may present a more suitable platform for the promotion of a new Audi design paradigm. In that particular sense, the eTron GT may be a "one off" of sorts. If so, it will almost certainly become a highly desirable collectors' item for the design affine.

Fully agree this is probably the best car shown on IAA, even though you might easily overlook a garbage truck with these blind spots in the back. Would love to see how this translates into a production model.

I am in love with this car. It totally blows everything in the segment out of the water.

If Audi manages to make the production version any close to this, then MB has a big problem with the EQS.

It has in my opinion an air (in addition to being the same type of vehicle) half sedan, half fastback, to the spirit and feeling that the CS concept of 13 or 14 years ago gave, with this you can see how well Audi has done them. things for 202 ....?

  • Agree
Reactions: SKY
The dawn of a new design paradigm approaching. Which concept is more indicative of the design of future production Audis ?

Or is the answer: "BOTH of them", "Neither"...?

I love it. Audi and Porsche are probably the best among the germans when it comes to electric designs. I heard its due around 2024? I personally wished it came sooner.

Overall the I feel like by the time this comes by mercedes would have figured out their designs. Or not?

P.S. I feel Gorden Wargener has lost it.

My sentiments as well. Of course, this is a matter of personal perception.

A good "ballpark" timeline. Innuendo indicates mid-to-late year

The upcoming M-B.EA and AMG.EA platformed cars (sometime around 2025-ish) should provide an answer.
P.S. I feel Gorden Wargener has lost it.

While I'm almost certain that Herr Wagener is a highly competent designer, he's currently at the bottom of my personal "totem poll" (again subjective) when it comes to design chiefs of the German premium manufacturers. And I'm quite immune to his glib-unless, of course, it becomes genuinely annoying. To his defense, it may simply be a matter of liberties afforded to him by his employer.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
