Re: Audi A5 cabrio (discussion thread I)

First spy

There’s a cover-up at Audi – but our spies have seen through it! This disguised prototype is the firm’s new A5 Cabriolet, which we’ve snapped testing near the firm’s HQ in Germany.

Going on sale next year, the model will strengthen the A5 range and is set to compete directly with the current best-selling executive drop-top – BMW’s 3-Series Convertible.

Unlike that car, the A5 Cabriolet will not get a folding metal roof. Instead it will continue Audi’s tradition of fabric hoods, which the company believes is the best compromise bet-ween styling, packaging and cost.

The fully electric top will offer excellent refinement, thanks to its multi-layered construction. And even though the hood folds into the boot, the A5 Cabriolet should still be practical, with plenty of luggage space.

It will also drive well. The hard-top version has been praised for its handling, and the Cabriolet promises to match this. Under the bonnet will be the same line-up of engines as the coupé – a 3.2-litre V6 petrol, plus 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre TDI diesels. The range will be topped off by the S5 Cabriolet, which will have a 4.2-litre V8 and quattro four-wheel drive.

The drop-top is likely to make its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March and go on sale in summer, starting at about £33,000 for the 2.7-litre TDI model.

More info: Audi A5 Convertible gets ready for Geneva debut

A prototype of the Audi A5 Convertible has been spotted testing around the company’s headquarters recently. The A5 Convertible will go on sale next year going head-to-head with the BMW 328i Convertible. The A5 Convertible will be directly followed by the Audi S5 Convertible that will compete with the BMW 335i Convertible.
However, unlike the 3-Series Convertible, the Audi A5 and S5 Convertible will have electric soft-tops to keep the weight down. AutoExpress says that the Audi Convertible should still be practical offering plenty of luggage space.

The A5 Convertible is expected to be powered by the same 3.2 liter FSI V6 unit plus the two 2.7 liter and 3.0 liter TDI diesels.
An official debut is expected at the Geneva Motor Show in March of 2008. Pricing is estimated at £33,000.

Preview: Audi A5 Cabrio headed to Paris Motor Show

Audi has confirmed production of its A4 cabrio will come to an end later this year and will be replaced early next year by the all-new A5 cabrio. Unlike the previous A4 version, which was built by Karmann, the new A5 drop-top will be built by Audi at its Neckarsulm plant in Germany alongside the coupe.

Unlike its 3-series rival from BMW, Audi will likely employ a lightweight canvas roof for its new convertible that will save both on costs as well as storage space. Expect the cabrio to be powered by the same engines as found in the coupe, which means the latest FSI and TDI engines, with output ranging from 125 to 195kW (170 to 265hp). There’s also likely to be V8 powered S5 and RS5 performance models as well.
The base model will remain FWD but AWD variants will feature latest quattro torque vectoring systems, which distribute drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability. Audi’s new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox should also feature in the new model.
A total of 28,000 A5 cabrios will be produced in the first year of production and pricing is expected to start at €37,000 in Europe. Expect to see it at the Paris Motor Show in October before its sales launch early next year.

Audi expected to introduce A5/S5 cabrio next year

Audi is intent on leaving no niche unfilled and the word from Inside Line is that the automaker is planning to unveil a cabrio variant of its A5 and S5 coupes. The convertible versions of the A5 and S5 won't be fitted with the folding hardtops that have become de rigueur among its luxury competitors, so expect a similar soft-top system to that found on the A4/S4/RS4 cabrio and TT roadster. Power will be provided by either the 265-hp, 3.2-liter V6 or the 354-hp 4.2-liter V8 found in the A5 and S5, respectively. Expect the new cabrios to debut later this year or early next, with sales beginning in the spring of 2009.

The roof looks quite good so far:D:usa7uh:

A black S5 Cabriolet with brown/cinnamon leather interior ,brushed aluminion inserts would just be amazing! especially with the roof down and hearing that 4.2 V8 rumble and rawr:D:D:D

No new photo's or information ?

I want to see this...
Maybe I'll have to wait until October 4.

All I seen was a white A5 with a white shield covering the roof and glass area.

There are a lot of VW Golfs. I think every VW Golf going on the market is here. Unfortunately for some there is only one example of the New Beetle.:D

I see I said it in februari already, but I still feel the same way: the cloth roof looks awesome.

I in fact really hope the next gen 3er cabrio is fitted with one as well again. A folding hartop becomes too heavy and complicated when it has to be a roof for four instead of two. A hardtop does look good on cars like the SLK, Z4 and SL (two seaters)

Very nice. The back is better resolved than the BMW 3er cabrio because of the fabric roof. No weird boot shutlines....

I'm surprised to see Audi goin for a rag top instead of a metal one,all the rivals are already utilizing folding hardtops.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
