usually when you buy Audi's they come with big price tags, and people usally buy hatchbacks to save money....so if they make it like the golf, like they have the standard gold, and the golf gti......more people will buy the a1:usa7uh:

From AutoWeek:

BMW’s Mini Cooper will come under fire in 2009, when Audi introduces an entry-level A1 model, followed by a top-secret high-performance S1 model aimed squarely at the Cooper S.

Although Audi officials in the United States are mum on the project, highly placed sources in Ingolstadt say the car is being engineered for both the European and the North American market. Coupe, convertible and three- and five-door hatchback versions are all in the product portfolio.

The range-topping performance S1, shown in these illustrations, will be powered by a 180-to-200-hp version of parent company Volkswagen’s 1.4-liter Twincharger (supercharged and turbocharged) engine, coupled to a Haldex-style multiplate-clutch transmission to give it permanent all-wheel drive. A seven-speed direct-shift gearbox would be standard. Sources say the S1 will be capable of 0 to 60 mph in less than 7.0 seconds and will have a top speed of about 150 mph.

The base front-wheel-drive A1 likely will be powered by VW’s 1.4-liter four-cylinder

direct-injection engine, producing 90 hp (naturally aspirated) or 120 hp (turbocharged) in Europe, but larger engines could be offered in U.S. models. Diesel models are also in the works. The standard A1 transmission will be a six-speed manual, with the seven-speed DSG optional on higher-end models.

While styling is always a key element of an Audi’s appeal, engineers aren’t taking dynamics for granted. Early plans had the new car based on the relatively basic and cheap-to-produce underpinnings of the last-generation VW Golf, complete with a torsion-beam rear suspension. But concerns about its ability to deliver a Mini-competitive driving spirit led to the decision to use the newer and more expensive mechanical package from the next-gen VW Polo. The new suspension offers two rear layouts, including a multilink setup that permits greater individual tuning.

Look for the A1 to reach the United States in mid-2010, following its European debut in late 2009. The A1 is part of an extensive new-model push by Audi. Known internally as Route 15, the plan calls for boosting global sales beyond 1.5 million by 2015. AutoWeek has learned the A1 is targeted for first-year sales of 100,000 to 150,000 cars worldwide.

I had said that almost one year ago:

A2 might share components with next VW Polo and Ibiza but it will be more upmarket as expected from an Audi. For example the rear suspension will be the same multi link (four link to be exact) found in Golf and A3 while Polo and Ibiza will have a less expensive torsion beam suspension.

According to Motor Authority

Audi will not only be displaying its all-new A1 minicar at October’s Tokyo Motor Show but it will also unveil its new hybrid drive system. Targeted at premium small cars such as BMW’s Mini, the new A1 will come as a three-door hatch and be priced less than €20,000 when it goes on sale in 2010.

Production of the new minicar will top 100,000 units per year and it may be joined by a new ’shooting brake’ mini-estate, a drop-top roadster and possibly a new Q1 mini-SUV, reports Auto Motor und Sport. The source also told that a mild hybrid option will be available as well as more conventional TSI and FSI petrol engines and TDI diesels.

This rendering gives us a preview as to what the final version may look likes and shows that designers are going with conventional hatchback styling and will incorporate Audi’s familiar oversized grille.

Sister brand Volkswagen, meanwhile, will showcase its own minicar concept at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The VW car will be built on a new low cost platform and will feature a rear-engined RWD layout and is expected to be sold in emerging markets for under €8,000.

The minicar segment is about to explode, with new models planned from most of the major carmakers including, for the first time, premium labels such as Audi, which is planning to launch the new A1 hatch in 2009. A concept version of the car will be displayed at next month’s Tokyo Motor Show complete with a hybrid drivetrain. These new renderings give us an accurate look at what to expect, revealing designers are going with conventional hatchback styling and Audi’s familiar oversized grille.

The A1 won’t be a niche model. Audi management is hoping to sell more than 100,000 units per year and will likely add a ’shooting brake’ mini-estate and cabrio to its lineup. Audi is also rumored to be working on a mini SUV labeled the Q1, which you can see a preview of by clicking here. In addition to the mild hybrid version, Audi will also build cars equipped with more conventional TSI and FSI petrol engines as well as its frugal TDI diesels displacing 1.4 and 1.6L.

The car will be built on a new platform that will also spawn the next-gen VW Polo as well as allow engineers to add quattro AWD for a low-volume performance model. The new platform also means engineers may add a new low cost dual-clutch transmission with seven gears in total. Unlike the production version of the VW up! concept, the Audi A1 won’t be cheap and is expected to have a price tag of around €20,000. By contrast, VW’s minicar is expected to cost close to €8,000.

Perfect mockups. I love the aluminum A and D pillar. The rear looks good too.

Cut the grille a little and this would look very nice! :usa7uh:

Audi A1 more info

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, 4Car had the chance to talk with Michael Dick, Audi’s board member responsible for product engineering and they find out new info about the upcoming A1.

A1 will not share the same all-aluminium, lightweight construction of the A2. It will feature a typical Audi design and will be built in steel on the PQ24 platform (shared with the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia).
A1 will be built in Brussels and sales will start in 2010. It won’t get a Quattro version when will first go on sale, but one and a three-door body version will follow in the next years.
The Audi A1 will be first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in a concept version. It will feature a four-wheel drive system, and the entry-level version at launch will produce less than 120g/km of CO2. It will be quite light, at under 1,100kg, but that’s still around 200kg more than the A2 weighed.
Michael Dick also revealed some of the Audi’s plans: a facelifted A3, due next year and to include a convertible, with an all-new A3 range following in 2012 ahead of the next-generation Volkswagen Golf. A Q5 compact SUV also arrives in 2008, with five seats and many components shared with the new A4 and A5. There will be a hybrid version aimed at the US market, where Audi will also launch an ultra-low-emission diesel engine.
In 2008, A5 and A4 will get a double-clutch DSG gearbox; also probably there will be a RS6’s twin-turbo, and the Lamborghini-based V10 engine in the R8 supercar.

New Audi A1 Mule Spied

worldcarfans.com
The first engineering prototype for the Audi A1 has just emerged from Audi's workshop near the Nürburgring. It's the first concrete evidence that development of Audi's upcoming Mini-fighter has become a reality.
Using the body from a VW Polo Cup Edition, Audi engineers have tacked-on fender flares to accommodate the increased width that will give the A1 the improved stance to battle the Mini from both a style and stability standpoint. Any thoughts that this is a mule for a future VW model should be erased when noting that this test vehicle is wearing a manufacturer's plate right out of Ingolstadt, Audi's home turf.

Audi is supposed to show a conceptual look at the styling direction for the A1 at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. With the sighting of this prototype, it will be nice to know that what shows up at Audi's auto show stand is already becoming a reality in Audi's engineering channels.

I wonder if they're running it on the Nurbrigring? Looks to be about the same size as a MINI Cooper.

re: New Audi A1 Thread Part II (Spy pics & info)

I think the little mule is really cute, I'd take it as is.

From what I know CAR tends to be pretty accurate with it's sources. Special thanks to Georg Kacher who has ties to Audi AG:

Unlike BMW’s Mini - which currently has no cars to platform share with - the A1 will share its underpinning with the next A3, due in 2010, and a number of other small VAG products.

The platform is called MQB, which means modular transverse matrix. It’s designed from the start to be cheaper to build and more flexible, thus Audi reckon it could be up to $1000 cheaper per car than today’s small-car building blocks. It should come in at €16,000 (£10,700) in today's money, meaning it’ll undercut the cheapest Mini by nearly 10 percent. Although we somehow doubt that will be the case in the UK.

The 2008 VW Polo won’t however use this platform, as that’s front-wheel drive only. This engineering mule is four-wheel drive, and Audi's engineers at the Nurburgring have been using sensitive monitoring equipment on all four driven wheels to test the quattro system.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
