Don’t get confused by the Volkswagen logo and the look of a tuned Polo; under this disguise is an early prototype of Audi’s forthcoming Mini-rivalling A1. The A1 will be unveiled in a concept version next month at the Tokyo Motor Show, and the production version will go on sale in 2009.

The A1 will share its underpinning with the next A3, due in 2010, and a number of other small VAG products. The platform is called MQB, which means modular transverse matrix. It’s designed from the start to be cheaper to build and more flexible.
Audi will offer four different versions: three-door hatch, five-door hatch, coupe and convertible.
Base models will be front-wheel drive, but as part of Audi’s green push all engines will be direct injection. The same 1.4-litre engine will be available with and without a turbo, and with outputs from 65 to 170bhp. A 1.6-litre diesel will play the same role for those who want an oil burner: expect 75 to 130bhp.

UK's AutoExpress is claiming that the new Audi A1, which will be shown as concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show this year, will look like the picture above when hitting the showrooms in 2010.

As you can see, the new A1 will be compact and distinctive. Audi’s most recent small hatchback was the supermini MPV-shaped A2. However, while the aluminium-bodied city car was a great technical accomplishment, its high price and quirky layout hampered sales. The A1 will take a more conventional route to success, using a traditional three-door layout and styling that builds on the themes introduced in the new A4 and A5.

The most distinctive feature will be at the front. The four-sided, chrome- rimmed grille is familiar as Audi’s, but the bonnet will have a strong crease, emphasising the shape of the nose. At the rear, the squat stance merges elements of the A3 and TT.

Inside, designers will be keen to give the dashboard a more creative style without compromising quality. Expect a slimmed-down version of the MMI cabin control system on top-of-the-range models, too.

Although the A1 will initially be offered only as a three-door, Audi might expand the line-up to include other bodystyles. A five-door and even a cabriolet could be added to give the brand the full range of models.

Audi A1 still on the drawing board

Audis have a tendency to look the same but that doesn’t mean designers don’t toil for months on getting the lines of the cars just right. Case in point is the situation with the upcoming Audi A1 hatch, which is reported to be still on the drawing board despite plans for the unveiling of a concept car at this month’s Tokyo Motor Show.

The problem is that officials have deemed the concept car to be too radical for production and thus no final design has been signed off. The new A1 is a small hatchback based on Volkswagen’s Polo and is being targeted at BMW’s Mini range. According to Automotive News, the A1 will begin production in Brussels at the end of 2009 and should top 100,000 units per year.
Power will come from a turbocharged range of diesel and petrol engines with displacing starting at just 1.2L and moving up to 2.0L. Audi will also be showcasing a hybrid version of the A1 concept at the Tokyo show and it’s possible the mild-hybrid version could also enter production. Unlike most minicars, the A1 won’t be cheap and is expected to have a price tag of around €20,000.

>>> "too radical to go into production"

Isn't that usually the point of an concept!?

AUDI A1 IMAGES

CGI artist Gabriel Rabhi has come up with the goods yet again. This time the talented guy has turned his attentions to Audi’s forthcoming A1. If rumours are to be believed, Audi is still tweaking the final design of the baby model. They should take a look at what Mr Rabhi has come up with:

Preview: 2010 Audi A1 five-door and cabrio

The minicar segment is about to explode, with new models planned from most of the major carmakers including, for the first time, premium labels such as Audi. While most are heading down the budget road Audi will be launching an upmarket minicar to tackle the Mini Cooper and a possible BMW version. Audi’s new model will be a production version of the A1 Metroproject revealed at last week’s Tokyo Motor Show. It will arrive on the market in late 2009 and will be followed soon after by several variants including a five-door hatchback and cabrio.

These new renderings give us an accurate look at what to expect, revealing designers will be sticking to the lines of the concept car. Some of the elements that are unlikely to make it to production include the exposed aluminum arches, 18in alloys and LED headlights.
The car will be built on a new platform that will also spawn the next-gen VW Polo. Regular versions will be FWD but a low-volume performance model is also on the cards, which could get a quattro AWD set-up. The new platform also means the A1 will be available with VW Group’s new low-cost DSG with seven gears in total.
Engine options will range from a series of low capacity TSI and TDI units ranging from 1.4 to 2.0L, and a new mild hybrid model could also be offered. The design will use a small electric motor integrated into the drivetrain, which kicks in during high-load situations. The full hybrid system with lithium-ion batteries as previewed by the Metroproject Concept is unlikely to enter production.

Will the audi A1 chassis be the same as the new seat ibiza?

Both use the new MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform.

MQB will underpin the majority of small cars and some of the "upper-medium" vehicles that the VW/Audi group produces, including the upcoming VW Golf , Passat, TT and A3, and a handful of Seats and Skodas.

Re: [PS] Audi A1

Looks quite naked without an alu frame surrounding the wind shield.

Re: [PS] Audi A1

Like the S5 wheels on it, but it need chrome around the side window.
The new A1 with a 160 hp 1.8TFSI engine will be a fun car to drive IMHO.

Jarod.

Without the alu frame the car lacks charm. It's a must.

re: New Audi A1 Thread Part II (Spy pics & info)

I like it, only the rear bumper is bothering me.

re: New Audi A1 Thread Part II (Spy pics & info)

A LOT better than the Metroproject. Love the front. The rear, I have an issue with how it is sculpted, could be the PS, but I still don't like the way the sheetmetal cuts the lights, same as the Metroproject. I would say it's a bit too "angry", for my taste.

Agree with Centurion, I knew there was something missing..I couldn't figure out what it was..but your dead on..they are a must.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
