Aston Martin reveals DBX name, first prototype for SUV

2015 concept previewing the SUV (shown below). There were rumors the automaker would go with a different name for production, with Varekai being one of the suggestions. Instead, the automaker has chosen to stick with DBX which links the SUV with the DB line of sports cars.

Judging from the photos and video, the DBX will be a small SUV with proportions similar to those of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. We're looking at a very early prototype so the design will evolve as development progresses. There is also a lot of camo gear, including fake panels, tacked on to hide the true shape.

We know the SUV will utilize a new platform developed specifically for a high-riding vehicle capable of off-road conditions. Specifically, Aston Martin will focus on suspension technology to address the SUV's mass, size and purpose. This has required a new type of testing procedure for the automaker normally focused on sports cars.

For the first real-world test, Aston Martin Chief Engineer Matt Becker drove a prototype along a Welsh Rally stage. Eventually, prototypes will be sent around the globe to tackle the harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahn and Nürburgring racetrack.

Aston Martin DBX concept
While Aston Martin first imagined the SUV as an electric car, that has changed due to the revival of Lagonda as Aston Martin's new electric car brand. CEO Andy Palmer confirmed Aston Martin dropped plans for the electric powertrain in April. However, a hybrid powertrain is a possibility. The standard powertrain meanwhile will likely be the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 Aston Martin sources from Mercedes-AMG.

As mentioned above, production will happen in Wales, at Aston Martin's St Athan plant currently under construction. The plant will start with production of the Rapide E electric sedan and then the DBX, followed by a pair of Lagonda offerings early next decade.

The DBX is the fourth of seven cars promised under Aston Martin's Second Century plan. The first was the DB11 which has since been followed by a redesigned Vantage and new DBS Superleggera. After the DBX will come a Vanquish supercar and then a Lagonda SUV and sedan. Aston Martin will then repeat the seven-car cycle with redesigned models. And along the way we'll also see special edition models like the Valkyrie and 003 hypercars.

Eh, makes sense from Aston Martin's perspective I suppose - but I think I'd pass. Nothing about what has made me like Aston in the past will translate to the DBX by the looks of this.

The CGI is absolutely gorgeous.

And with a wee bit of imagination...(lower ride height, somewhat stretched wheelbase, 4 doors...) we could have an absolutely smashing Rapide II.

In the age of the Cullinan, the Bentayga and the upcoming Ferrari SUV, this only seems logical. What doesn't seem logical is the whole age of the Cullinan, the Bentayga and the upcoming Ferrari SUV.

Aston Martin needs a bread and butter car and the DBX will be it. Whether it will have a pony trick is a different matter.

Wonder where it will be pricing wise, Urus? Cullinan range? It looks like shit so far, just like that camoed lifted-up Ferrari GTC4Lusso.

So, we have the "OFFICIAL" DBX thread even though the factory which will produce the car hasn't even been finished yet. I'd say it's a tad premature.

The prefix needs to be changed to a "SPY" prefix or something.

As I've said before, I don't see why the Cullinan and Bentayga can't uphold traditional brand values, or indeed be better at them than a standard Saloon might be. The likes of a Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche or Aston make far less sense by comparison.

I agree. However the emergence of adaptive suspension, electric anti-rollbars, fast slush boxes, electric anti-roll bars and dynamic engine mounts are enabling big heavy cars to mask their weight and central gravity in ways that SUVs in 2001 weren't able too.

You can now have a 3-in-1 car that's an SUV, sporty car and family car which wasn't possible in the past.

I used "official" because it is the first official release by Aston Martin about the production car. This is not a third party spy shot thread.

We usually start an "OFFICIAL" thread when the final production car is launched. A better title would have been "Aston Martin reveal name of new SUV" without any "Official" prefix. And what's with the 2019? This model year nonsense needs to stop, and it probably will be a 2020 model year (or later) anyway, so it's meaningless.

Overall I'll give your thread starting a 3/10 at best.

This isn't 'Nam, there are rules. If this isn't nipped in the bud we'll have total anarchy on here.

* I'm kind of joking with you, so don't take it to heart. And I do appreciate you making the informative post in the first place. (y)

Looks like this could turn out far more interesting than the concept showcased. Good to see it's a five dr and addressing the target market.
It's a great time to be in the market for a ultimate high end luxury, SUV. The choices are becoming far greater.

Is that what a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin or Porsche is supposed to be though? There's nothing to stop a Rolls-Royce SUV being the pinnancle of wafty ostentatious luxury and comfort, along with whopping size and a general disregard for being sensible (I appreciate Cullinan might not be those things, but I'm talking about SUV's in terms of principle). It would be easy to make a case for Rolls-Royce or Bentley wanting to put out an SUV because it could be better at those things, as somewhat demonstrated by Range Rovers popularity long before SUV's became trendy. It doesn't seem like that long ago that some magazines (Top Gear I think), were proclaiming the Range Rover to be the best all-round luxury car on the market at the time, against the Phantom 7.

On the flip side, Porsche never sat down and said "Right, we think we can do a better job of offering what the 911 offers by making a two tonne SUV", Ferrari never sat down and said "How can we make the most beautiful sports car or continent crossing GT car possible... I know, lets make an SUV.." and so on.

I'm not saying they're not effective products, they clearly are, but I think in some cases the fact it's essentially a no-brainer cash grab is far more obvious and there's not really any other brand based justification.

Personally, if I were Aston, I'd be putting saloons and SUV's under Lagonda, and I certainly wouldn't be giving it a David Brown prefixed name. (I'd also be re-organising the model line-up so the Vantage was a proper luxury GT with whopping performance again, but maybe I'm stuck in the 90's)

Aahh... the 90's

I'd sooooo much rather we got a new interpretation of that, than either the Valkyrie or the DBX.

Kinda shaped like the LeVante, but I expect it to be gorgeous.

The 1989 V8 Vantage is my favourite Aston of all times.

Performance SUVs are a very much market led product extension. It goes against the philosophies of several sports car manufacturers but they have caved in rather than develop sedans/shooting brakes to convince consumers that a low centre of gravity saloon can offer a lot of joy!

Me too, I was going to make a quip about the 90's vantage being a more brutish and masculine car than it became in the 00's... but, to be fair P890 BGP belonged to this guy..
