DBX Aston Martin DBX Concept

Aston Martin DBX crossover plant begins construction in Wales
Aston Martin's second manufacturing facility will be located in St Athan in Wales where it will make the DBX.

The original list for Aston Martin’s new factory had no less than 20 locations on it and in the end it was down to four sites: two were British, one was somewhere in the Middle East, and the last one was in Alabama, United States. After much consideration, St Athan in Wales was declared the winner back in February this year where AM is now setting up shop to build its second manufacturing facility.

A recruitment program began this summer to find up to 750 employees for the plant and some of them are already being trained at home in Gaydon by taking part in the assembly of the new DB11.

The new plant currently being constructed in Wales will serve the purpose of putting together a production version of the DBX concept. Aston Martin is one of the last automakers to jump on the SUV bandwagon and it will effectively do it in 2019 when production of the high-riding model will commence.

The “luxury GT crossover” as it’s being described along with the new plant in Wales represent part of a £200-million investment in new products and facilities. Aston Martin has already announced that with the road-going DBX it has plans to lure in affluent women in search of a safe premium car providing “flexibility and room for the children.”

Details about the crossover are scarce at the moment, but we remind you the concept was a technological tour de force, with electric motors installed inboard of the wheels and driven by lithium sulphur cells. Carbon ceramic brakes were also part of the package, as were the side cameras replacing the conventional mirrors. The two-door DBX was also fitted with drive-by-wire steering and auto-dimming reinforced glass windows. However, most of these goodies were just for show, so don’t expect the production version to be nearly as exciting.

Avarvarii's render suck so much. Can't believe they actually are published outside of the shithole called internet.

He's actually pretty good imho. Most of them are fairly close. Some of them of course miss the mark. Best one are still from Varicak.

Aston Martin DBX SUV Production Confirmed For 2019
Jul 24, 2018 at 1:35am By: Dominik Wilde, Contributor Published by: Adrian Padeanu
It will take place at the company's new facility in Wales.
Aston Martin has announced that its first SUV will enter production late next year, following the completion of its new car assembly plant at St Athan, in South Wales.

The company's board of directors recently had their first meeting at the new facility, which includes three converted former-Ministry of Defence hangars. The fitting out of the hangars has already begun and it is set to be complete before the SUV starts production in late 2019.

The new plant will create 750 new jobs for the company, with 150 of those already being hired. When complete the plant will join Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters and Newport Pagnell as the company's production facilities.

"We are delighted at the progress being made at the St Athan site. The team have done a fantastic job in advancing the facility and I was incredibly proud to chair our first Board meeting at the new plant," said Dr Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer. "Wales has a long history of engineering excellence and the Board is delighted that it will play such an important part in Aston Martin’s development."
Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport Ken Skates added: "I am delighted to see our partnership with Aston Martin, right in the heart of our Cardiff Airport and St Athan Enterprise Zone, coming to fruition."

"Progress to date continues to match the company’s aspiration for future growth and, when complete, the site will provide highly-skilled employment and world-class apprenticeship opportunities in the automotive sector for many generations to come. I wish them the same success with the next phase."

According to reports, the new SUV from Aston Martin will be called the Varekai, derived from the Roma word for 'wherever', which is appropriate for an off-roader.

The new car will come with a range of powertrain options, including Mercedes-AMG-sourced V8s and V12s, and the hybrid system that will be used in the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. However, the all-electric drivetrain of the 2015 DBX concept appears to have been scrapped.

Get Ready For The Inevitable: Aston Martin Varekai SUV Rendered
Our rendering shows how the Lamborghini Urus rival could look.
Aston Martin’s DBX SUV has been in the pipeline for a while now, but while rumors spread like wildfire, there’s been little in the way of clear communication from the guys and gals at Aston’s Gaydon HQ.

This rendering, however, shows us how the finished article might look. With styling taken from the DB11, our image presents an instantly recognizable Aston Martin front end on a slightly raised four-door coupe body.

The hood is a little shorter than you might expect – possibly to allow for the extra cabin space and a second set of doors – while the windscreen is more upright than normally seen on Aston’s rakish designs.

It’s not all change, though. The vents behind the rear wheels are an Aston trademark, while the swooping roofline features the DB11’s slightly detached C-pillar. In the DB11, it’s used to channel air towards the rear spoiler, but whether such a feature will be necessary on the British company’s high-riding SUV remains to be seen.
Not that the DBX, which is expected to bear the "Varekai" name when it finally reaches series production, looks especially high-riding. Although this render shows a clear increase in ground clearance compared with, say, a Rapide S, it’s hardly a Mercedes G-Class. Like the Lamborghini Urus, then, this sports utility vehicle is likely to focus more on the sports and less on the utility.

We don’t yet know just how sporty it will be, though. The rumor mill continues to churn out theories about what could eventually power the DBX, and suggestions have ranged from electric motors to massive gasoline engines.

According to recent reports, though, the Mercedes-AMG mild-hybrid straight-six used in the CLS 53 is in the running to be slotted under the Aston’s hood. It wouldn’t be the first time an AMG engine has found a home in an Aston Martin – just look at the C63’s 4.0-liter V8, which also nestles in the nose of the standard DB11.

If an interview between Motoring and Aston’s chief creative officer, Marek Reichmann, is anything to go by, however, we can be pretty sure the DBX/Varekai won’t get a diesel engine.

When asked whether an oil-burner would work in the SUV, his answer was: “Never, ever, ever, ever, never, ever, ever. Never. Never! No diesels.”

So that’s a resounding no, then.

But whatever powers the DBX, we can be sure it’ll find homes with plenty of the world’s richest households. And that’s a good thing, because whatever you think of obscene displays of wealth, driving a car that looks this good is as much of a public service as your local art gallery.
