Notes from the article:

• The Golf R won the test because of its praticality and costs. The engine is powerful, the DSG is brilliant. The adaptive suspension is not too comfy.
• The BMW accelerates better, brakes better and handles better. But it's lost because of its unpractical coupé-body.

I really can't think of any reason, what so ever, to go for the Golf R over the 135i.

The BMW's engine character outweighs the Golf's price and practicality for me. There's also something very appealing about the 135i's compact, coupe looks too. So, to give the admittedly attractive yet-still-a-hatchback Golf R points for practicality over a far more exclusive coupe design in the context of this test is simply not apples for apples.

In my book the Coupe and Hatch should score equal points on looks and practicality respectively and then judged further on the obectively comparable such as price, performance, frugality etc...

BTW, with the Golf R winning over the 135i coupé DTC in the AMS, it CLEARLY shows we shouldn't take every result for granted. It's absolutely impossible in my world that the Golf wins. Absolutely impossible.

That's why there's a "sporty" edition of AMS: Sport Auto. If they would test these cars, the BMW would win. That's clear.

Probably. I think it's 4,1 seconds, not 7,1.

That's because it's a test by AMS and not SportAuto. Most of the reader will never own an 135i or Golf R I think and they just want to test and compare what people need in daily use. Well, completely mindless with such cars, but they ever did and will always do compare praticality.
They even do with hardcore sportcars like GT3 RS (and it will get a "minus" then, because you can't go to the next IKEA for buying some new shelves.).

Should the Golf have won? Well that greatly depends on what ever perspective you happen to have, some might view that fact that the Golf got exceedingly close to the 135i in terms of overall performance yet was far more accommodating and practical as reason to give it the win, where as others might view outright performance as the only thing important and see the 135i the winner because it got close to being as practical as the Golf yet out performed it.

I personally don't see a right or wrong opinion or arguments either way, it's what ultimately suits you which is important, all comparison tests are is a rough guide to possible brands/cars worth considering.

And while I agree that a Golf is more practical than an 135i, I still disagree highly with the result. No Golf will ever be better than the 135i. Fact.
