Especially now ... with V-class full-size van sales figures included in monthly MB Cars total sales figures.
As said: in the monthly sales reports MB includes V-class sales figures in the total MB Cars sales figures; but that's not the case in Daimler quarterly financila reports where V-class sales (and therefore the revenues from the sales) are illustrated as part of MB Vans division financial & sales report. Go figure. Some sort of "creative PR" going on in Daimler.
Not creative PR, just the standard accounting tricks every company uses.

IT'S BEEN LEADING IN 2016 ALREADY - once you clear MB Passenger Cars total sales of "intruding" V-class sales figures. ;)

MB only leads BMW in total worldwide sales when V-class sales figures are included in MB sales figures, while still lagging behind BMW sales (talking about core brands only, w/o smart, MINI & Rolls).

By how much? Do we know the V-class figures?

I wonder how legal is this statement from MB, because it is misleading the investors in shares. They stated the monthly increase is 12% which looks fantastic, but in fact it is less than 6%. Also since they include the V class in cars sales, then we should read in there monthly report something like 80% decrease in van sales

Since sales do not equal profitability, I would imagine that investors look at the financial data more than they look at the sales volumes.

For example Daimler's share price is lower than BMW's, but last year they paid a slightly bigger dividend than BMW - in recent years BMW have paid more than Daimler. I think that's the kind of thing investors might notice more.

If you read the annual reports it's clear the manufacturers don't seem to be required to divulge any specific information about model sales, hence the reporting style tends to vary when it comes to volumes, however they are required to be transparent with their financial data and this is externally audited prior to publication of the figures.

BMW’s sales fell 8.0 percent in August to 25,531. For the year, sales have fallen 8.3 percent to 204,744 units. Mercedes had a 3.0 percent sales increase last month to 31,556. For the year they were up 1.3 percent to 241,890.

Mercedes-Benz USA Closes Out Third Quarter With Record September Sales

Mercedes-Benz for the first time sells more
than 200,000 vehicles in one month
Mercedes-Benz delivered 211,286 vehicles to customers in
September (+12.1%), more than ever before in one month. This means
that for Mercedes-Benz, the third quarter of this year is the quarter
with the highest unit sales so far. In the three core regions of Europe,
Asia-Pacific and NAFTA, new sales records were set for the month of
September, the third quarter and the year to date. Unit sales of the
SUVs and the E-Class were particularly strong last month. At smart,
the anniversary of two million cars sold since 1998 was celebrated.
Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz has managed the hat-trick: In September, in the
third quarter and also in the first nine months of the year, the Stuttgart
based company with the three-pointed star achieved three new records and
is doing better than ever before. Last month, sales reached the all-time high
of 211,286 vehicles (+12.1%), passing the mark of 200,000 units in one
month for the first time. In the period of July to September, the bestselling
quarter so far was achieved with sales of 531,302 units (+11.2%). Since the
beginning of the year, sales by Mercedes-Benz have risen at a double-digit
rate to a record number of more than 1.5 million vehicles (1,537,921 units,
+11.7%). Last month, Mercedes-Benz was the market leader among the
premium manufacturers in Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland,
Japan, Taiwan, USA, Canada und Mexico.
“In September, we scored a hat-trick – the best month with more than
200,000 units sold, the best quarter and the best first nine months of a year
for Mercedes-Benz,” stated Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of
Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing
& Sales. “We continued our product offensive in September with the E-Class
Estate, the long-wheelbase version of the E-Class Saloon, the C-Class
Cabrio and the GLC Coupé.”

He was including the motorcycles and everything, and comparing to only MB car sales.
Im glad he got to be happy for a little while.

57,985 units deficit will be virtually impossible for them to make up this year, there isn't enough new product, unless the 1-er Sedan hits the market in China like now.

Those YTD are reflecting group sales for both brands. If one compares BMW Group (BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce) to Mercedes-Benz Cars (Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach, smart), the whole picture will be revealed.

23.528 units deficit. when it comes to BMW passenger cars vs. MB passenger cars.
It will be a close fight this year. BMW's strongest months are usually November and December.
I think there will be just a few thousand units separating second from first.
However, even if BMW sells more it will still be MB's victory since they made such a gigantic leap and there's no longer a huge sales gap between the two. Kudos!

I know it's a contentious point, but I'm okay with them calling the V-class a passenger vehicle, Mercedes advertises it as such (except the Marco Polo, which they advertise as a camper), and you can buy it from a non commercial vehicle dealer. The Citan Tourer, Vito Tourer, and Sprinter Travelliner would also be classed as passenger vehicles, but these are listed only within the van range, and I believe only sold through Mercedes Benz Van dealers. It's a bit of a fiddle, but it's justifiable IMHO.

Interestingly, last years annual report talked about the new pick-up (X-class ?) being sold under Mercedes Benz Vans. It will be interesting to see where they allocate those sales.

Well there can be no such excuse in the U.S. market, MB is KILLING BMW, Lexus and Audi in YTD sales of actual luxury vehicles. NO Smart, Mini, or Vans numbers needed!

Since the beginning of 2016, the core brand BMW in Germany has seen sales of 217,192 units, 5.8 percent above the previous year's figure. MINI sold 36,966 vehicles, an increase of 11.8 percent compared to the first ten months of the previous year.

In addition to BMW and MINI, the major competitors also reported slight declines in October. Audi sold 23,292 units, down 2.9 percent on the previous year. Mercedes fell short of the previous year's figure by 2.4 percent and fell to a sales volume of 24,907 units in October 2016.

In the first ten months of 2016, the BMW Group achieved sales of 254,158 units with its BMW and MINI brands. Audi grew by 8.7 per cent to 250,976 units, just below the sales figures of BMW and MINI. Mercedes (260,735 / + 8.8%) and Smart (30,386 / -5.0%) are clearly in the lead with 291,121 vehicles sold together.
