I expected a big drop, but their SUVs are carrying the weight. The new GT looks like it is killing the SL. EVs are way down. GLC, GLE, GLS and C are doing the heavy lifting. The GLA must have been in short supply last year, not sure what the huge increase is about. E is way down because those coupe/cabrio sales are now going to the CLE which seems to be doing pretty good.

Mercedes-Benz sold 594,600 cars and vans in the third quarter
  • Mercedes-Benz Cars: Q3 sales reached 503,600 cars, +1% quarter-on-quarter with good momentum in the U.S. and stable sales in Europe. Plug-in-Hybrid sales up +10%
  • Mercedes-Benz Vans: Q3 sales reached 91,100 vans in line with expectations
Mercedes-Benz Group sold 594,600 cars and vans in the third quarter in a challenging environment. Sales of Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars continued to rise quarter-on-quarter, driven by improved product availability. However softer demand, mainly in Asia, affected overall sales. Mercedes-Benz Vans faced a softening environment in the third quarter especially in the core markets Germany, U.S. and China. In Europe overall, excluding Germany, Mercedes-Benz Vans saw a very solid sales development.

Mercedes-Benz Cars
“Mercedes-Benz sold more than 500,000 cars from July to September, a slight increase compared with the second quarter and in line with the prior-year period. Offering desirable products is the best way to forge ahead as consumer demand softens in some important markets.”

Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG. Marketing & Sales
Mercedes-Benz Cars Q3 sales rose 1% on the quarter, to 503,600 units and remained on last years’ level as weaker macroeconomic conditions, mainly in Asia, outweighed improved product availability in Q3.
The market environment for battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales remained subdued with competitive pricing in important markets. Plug-in-Hybrids sales increased by 10% globally in the third quarter mainly driven by the U.S. market.

As stated in September, sales of Top-End vehicles in particular were impacted by a slowdown in China to 61,800 units, affecting sales of S-Class family vehicles. However, the flagship remained the undisputed leader in its segment in all key regions. Sales of Mercedes-AMG performance cars increased 8% compared to Q3 2023, thanks to improved product availability. Sales of the G-Class rose 2% on the quarter, even during the transition to an all-new model, which is receiving excellent customer feedback.

First deliveries of the new electric G-Class started in September. Mercedes-Maybach presented its latest and sportiest model in August, the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series (provisional figures, combined energy consumption: 13.7 l/100 km | combined CO₂ emissions: 312 g/km | CO₂ class: G).
Sales in the Core segment increased by 4% quarter-on-quarter to 301,000 vehicles, and by 4% compared with the prior-year period, driven by further improved availability of GLC models and the market introductions of CLE models.

With 140,700 vehicles sold in the Entry segment, sales were around the same level as Q2, but below Q3 the previous year. This development is mainly driven by the market development in China and in line with the company’s value-over-volume oriented sales approach.
Sales in North America increased significantly by 29% compared to prior-year quarter, driven by good sales momentum in the U.S. market after full availability of GLC models and further market launches of Mercedes-AMG models.

Quarter-on-quarter sales in Europe remained stable, reaching 158,300 vehicles. Market development remained heterogeneous, with positive sales momentum in the UK, where Q3 sales rose 17% compared to last year. In Germany, Q3 Top-End sales remained flat, while E-Class and GLC models proven popular. Mercedes-Benz is the clear leader in the PHEV segment in Germany.

Quarter-on-quarter sales in Asia remained subdued, particularly in the Top-End segment, with 226,300 units sold. In Q3, the macroeconomic environment softened, first and foremost in China which impacted overall sales. An overall lower consumption, especially for luxury goods and continued discounting mainly in the EV segment, affected sales in China. Despite the challenges, Mercedes-Benz maintained its overall market share in China and remained customers’ top choice in the luxury car market priced RMB 1 million and above. To enhance our offering, the core product portfolio in China will see more intelligence feature upgrades within the year. The new E-Class was launched in October in India, while overall Q3 sales increased by 21%.

Mercedes EV model sales are a disaster, they sold less than half of BMW EV sold. The EQS sold a massive 50% less than last year in the US, means something is seriously wrong. All that investment and meagre sales will bring them big losses.

Hmmm....what could possibly be wrong. I don't understand!1!!

How is that possible for a vehicle like the G?

It's an icon with a facelift. But yeah it's remarkable for sure considering the price of the thing. It costs like as much as the top 7 combined.

As for BMW, I guess the new X3 and new 5er aren't a thing yet there? Kind of weird to not see those in the top 20.

Tundra trucks and Sequoia SUV's exit the assembly line as finished products at Toyota's truck plant in San Antonio, Texas, U.S. April 17, 2023.

Toyota Motor (7203.T), opens new tab said on Wednesday its worldwide production fell for an eighth straight month in September, as both sales and output declined in its two biggest markets, the United States and China.
The Japanese automaker's global output for September fell 8% compared to the same month a year earlier to 826,556 vehicles, with U.S. production down 14% and that in China dropping 19%.
U.S. output suffered from a production and delivery suspension of the Grand Highlander and Lexus TX sport utility vehicles due to an airbag issue.

All of the legacy car makers are making massive losses in China. The way it's going they will all be bankrupt in China within the next 3 to 5 years and pull their businesses out from there. Chinese people are all becoming nationalists and want to only buy their own car brands which are expanding at a massive pace due to the huge incentives they getting from the Chinese Government.

At the moment all I see is the US and European Union are trying to stop the Chinese imports with tariffs. Instead of complaining about it why don't they do the same as the Chinese and provide a massive stimulation program with incentives to help their car manufacturers sell at lower prices and this will automatically make more people keen to buy the legacy cars in the US and Europe ahead of the Chinese new entries.

Quite amazed to see how Ford and Vauxhall have both fallen from the top of the sales chart in the UK. Both those brands were the darlings of the UK but now VW is tops, Audi in 2nd and BMW 3rd, boy how times have changed.

I wonder why Tesla sales have dropped so much this month in the UK?

Ford and Vauxhall have both fallen from the top of the sales chart in the UK.

Puma is still the best selling car here this year. But yeah, the doom and gloom of the German car industry doesn't really show in our numbers here.

Not sure about Tesla, their figures used to fluctuate a lot based on when the shipments came in, but I thought that had stabilised a bit.

Sales in Germany in Oct 24 for the Top 10.

Interesting which car is in 10th place despite its high cost.

The EQ sales in China are an absolute disaster at the moment. Mercedes should be very worried for the failure of their EQ range in the US and China.

Mercedes EQ models are slow sellers in China

Mercedes EQ sales collapse dramatically – despite high discounts
Mercedes sells the Mercedes EQE in China with up to 40%. In Germany there is between 0 and 3%.

Despite MBUX and the huge MBUX Hyperscreen, Chinese customers are not keen on the EQE or EQS. This also applies to the SUV models of the EVA2 models.

In a market with over a billion inhabitants, Mercedes did not sell a single EQE sedan in October.

The other models EQA and EQB as well as EQS, EQE SUV are also in the lower three-digit or even only double-digit range.

One could now say that customers don't want electric cars - but that's far from the truth. In China, NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) are booming. The growth rates here are a phenomenal 60% and Mercedes, BMW, Audi, VW and Porsche are simply not present here.

It is said that parents still buy German combustion engines and children are proud of their own electric cars. Only Tesla continues to sell between 30,000 and 45,000 cars a month in China. They are actually the only Western car manufacturer that is still successful in China. Even the sales figures of smart #1, #3 and now #5 are intoxicating compared to Mercedes, but in absolute terms not great either, even though the vehicles are developed and produced in China.

The Mercedes EQE and EQS sedans have outstanding aerodynamics and long ranges. When the update to eATS2.0 and 800 volts (platform update to EVA2M ) comes along, they are truly state-of-the-art. But is it of any use to them?

I think the EQE and EQS sedans have a problem all over the world. They don't convey enough status to customers (or they don't convince with their design). This is also shown by the significant drop in sales in the USA.

In summary:
  • The Mercedes EQ design is not well received worldwide (with the exception of EQA and EQB in Europe)
  • Western manufacturers are currently having an extremely difficult time in China
Mercedes now has to hold out in China for around 18 months and hope that the new products will be well received by customers. Mercedes is focusing on new products such as the electric GLC, the electric C-Class and the new electric MMA platform, with many developments from China for China. By then, they will have lost a lot of ground, whether they like it or not, because even if they have identified the error, it takes a long time in automobile production to implement it in the form of new products.

Whether VW, Audi, Porsche, BMW or Mercedes, we will probably never see market shares in China return to the level they were before the Corona crisis.

The sales figures analysis of the Mercedes EQ models:

The EV numbers in China from Jan-Sept 24 are around 50% lower than in Germany, although for Mercedes the Chinese market is around twice the size of Germany.
Compared to the three quarters of 2023, sales in 2024 (Jan-Sept) fell by 22%, although the NEV market in China recently grew by 60%.

After seeing dozens of reviews of chinese cars , I'm starting to believe that the main issue is price.

Just saw the Zeekr 001 . Why would a chinese dude buy an EQE over Zeekr 001 ?

That car is 37k....More power , more range , more features , better design (arguably )
