GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) 2026 AMG GT 4-Door Vision EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) is the first generation five-door variant of the AMG GT two-door sports car. Production: September 2018– Model years: 2019–
The problem with the production version is that the front end appears to be similar to the first concept or the new CLA.

Which could be dramatic…

Tail lights have got a few tricks up their sleeve

Obviously triple tail light units have got a long history at Mercedes, not the least exemplified by the latest AMG GT. Replacing the typical horizontal strip or layered design by circles is however unexpected and instantly summons a host of performance cars from other brands. Likewise for the slim vertical headlights evoking '00s-'10s Ferraris and the latest Maseratis; but of course there have been a bunch of Mercedes sports cars with more or less vertical headlights pushed to the side making room for a wide grille: SLS, the 2 generations of the aformentioned GT, the 300 SL, God forbid the comparison, etc. So after the initial shock at the catfish face and Italian rear end, it becomes apparent the model isn't completely devoid of design heritage

... the model isn't completely devoid of design heritage
In reference to elements characteristic of more recent M-B design heritage:

On the pre-production prototypes (now gradually being ridden of veiling camouflage), we can see the the "square" side glass/roof frames that quote a characteristic element of M-B cars dating back to the W201 and W/S/C 124s. It remains an element found on current M-B sedans, the CLE, estates and SUV/SAC vehicles, save the R232 SL and AMG GT coupe.

Mercedes needs to fire their tasteless design team. Awful proportions, the same cartoonish dumb front design again and again. I like the round tail lights but that’s it.

BMW with their new design language will outclass mb. At least from the front.

They never learn. They could not sell their eq whatever. Because it was ugly, cheap looking bs with awful proportions Dumb front, headlights. And what did they do? They made another same bs hahaha. Mb just fire you *ags that call themselves designers lmfao

Particularly interesting photo images. And yes...IMHO...this car will clearly present its M-B design lineage.
I'm becoming increasingly optimistic that this will be a seriously eye pleasing automobile. Hopefully, the interior will have been addressed properly and will appear far more elegant and sumptuous than that of the GT-XX concept.

Unfortunately, it may take 8-12 months before the public can see these cars in EU market M-B/AMG showrooms. I say, the sooner the better.

Mercedes needs to fire their tasteless design team.

Frankly, that statement is a bit unfair, don't you think ?

Automotive designers are always constrained by requirements presented in corporate specification catalogues. Sometimes, these allow designers a bit more creative freedom. But they often do not. Too many cooks can lead to a menu that is not as tasty as it had promised to be. There are many cases in point.

I think with this concept Wagener wanted to bring in some design elements of the 1970s C111 but in a 4dr coupe form with elongated long proportions to make it look sleek. The front end does look odd from some angles and it doesnt have anything near of the design pureness and perfection of the C111, but with some refinement could work well on a road car. I like the rear end, with 3 round lights, it doesn't really look like a Mercedes, as most models in the last 50 to 60 years have all had rectangular, triangular or elliptical shaped tail lights, but then again has some nod to the C111.

It’s a sedan, what do want it to be shaped like?

Uhh it’s a concept. You can clearly see the production car is taller with a more realistic roofline.

M
Fair enough. Close ups of the prototype appears to indicate that the production car won't be quite as low as a Taycan. Mid section looks slightly chunkier.

Remove Before Race had an interesting take on what the production design will look like:
That actually looks really good. Much better than the concept. A bit of a resemblance at the front end to the GT coupe but also adding some of its own flavour.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this actually turns out worse than the concept.

I’m affraid of the cartoony CLA details and the horrendous fake grille.

I 100% believe it's better than the concept in many ways, but damn the fussy grille treatment mars an otherwise great design. All my opinion. I can only be grateful they revised the C-class and GLC front end in time.

Why? The new C and GLC also appear to have huge fake grilles ala Audi EVs…

The W222 had the last good looking and well executed grille. All panamericanas, shiny EQE and horizontal Vagina-grille a-la C class are tacky as hell.
If this wouldn’t be enough, lets stick chromed stars on cracky plastic.

Also, the grille story at Mercedes became an utter chaos, they don’t even know which stick on each model.

They need a complete redesign, beginning from scratch.
