That is some brilliant augmented sound engineering, probably the best in the business so far.

I agree.

And come to think of it...so what if the sound is "artificial". Think of how many people enjoy visiting fast food places and stuffing their faces with garbage that is full of artificial ingredients and swilling beverages full of chemical, articial flavour additives. How many people are buying clothes made of synthetic fabrics ? How many folks use Gemini and ChatGTP ? How many people subscribe to socalled "news providers" that are little more than brain protheses ?

Those that are bothered by augmented sound can turn the volume down or off. Or prepare a meal with fresh produce. Buy clothing containing natural fabrics only. Rely on self conducted research by reading relevant literature or a reputable newspaper. Turn the TV or CNN, FOXNews or whatever "newsstreams" off. Also, the "snap, crackle and pop" of a 1960s vintage Alfa Romeo DOHC il4 is one hell of a lot more "authentic" than what is coming out of modern ICE exhaust pipes.

Folks will pick their own poison...and should be happy with their choice, whatever that may be.

Mercedes have said that they want buyers to pick the car, and then decide which power train they want. I hope that includes AMG. It would be nice if they took the X290 and put the upcoming V8 in it, and put the C590 body shell over the top and the same interior inside, so buyers can choose. V8 or insane power.

I do this, I always prefer natural materials.

I really look forward to testdrive this AMG.

Yes...I am keeping my fingers crossed that the announced convergence of ICE/BEV design at M-B is successful. Not only in the commercial sense, but also in terms of rekindling the flames of aspiration regarding M-B vehicles in general. Rekindling the more recently squandered image of "being exceptional", "a standard".

Wow...BEVs by German manufacturers are set to make some downright powerful statements over the course of the coming months. And while spanning a larger territory of significant segments as well. This AMG 4 door GT sedan...the BMW NA0 i3...the M-B MMA and first MB.EA vehicles...the VAG ID. 2 segment of vehicles...and a number of potentially extremely cool electric SUVs/SACs by Porsche, M-B and BMW...

These YASA motors are game changing indeed for power to weight ratio. Just 13kg and 550kw/750PS!!!

Mercedes Benz will use these in mass production in future with even lower powered versions and help to save alot of weight and space.

We'll eventually get to a point where the electric motors will weigh less than a brake disk and caliper setup. At which point, in-wheel motors might become a thing.

The combination of a yasa motor and a M177 sounds delicious.
Maybe with super capacitors instead of a battery for 10sec boost.

They could probably fit a downsized version of this in the transmission, or maybe even in the differential. Maybe 6kg version with 150-200kW. Would allow for much more compact and lightweight hybrid systems (not including the battery).
The current P3 hybrid unit is like 200kgs. Halving the weight owing to NMC batteries and a tiny but powerful motor would be fantastic for e-Performance models.

Likewise for the P2 hybrids.

No NCM batteries please.
I really despise them.

A P2 hybrid with 50kg weight would be fun. The C63SE shows us 4-5kWh are more than enough.

The funny thing is I see many stupid f#cks driving fat SUVs with a shity turbo and a farty exhaust and a slush box complaining about how EVs are not fun! Unless you are dallying a manual/NA engined car you really have no standing to complain about how EVs are not fun.

A 60's Alfa? Snap, crackle and pop will be the timing chain, the fusebox, and the head gasket, respectively.

Anyhow, there's plenty of research that explains why humans find the characteristics of engine/exhaust/intake sounds appealing on a neuro-sensory level, and I'd suggest it's all pretty solid... however, I believe whether you need it be real, or accept it when you know it's artificial, is more of a purely psychological thing.

I don't think this is analogous to artificial things in what we eat (obvious health and consumption issues), and perhaps not functionally the same as fabrics or textiles (heat or moisture permeability for instance). I'd suggest it's simply more analogous to whether we need a percussionist beating a skin in our favourite music, or if we're just as happy when the same sound is electronically sequenced.

And even then they're fun! Just in a different way.

Why not both

Realistically, most of the people commenting are probably like me, and don't even have a sports car/supercar.

I agree, it’s a different way of fun.

60‘s Alfa Romeros can sound like this If you use big carbs and race cams.

The Lancia Fulvia also often sounds like this.

Compared to a I6 or V8 an EV is a golf cart to me. No fun beside straight line speed with most of them. No sound or engine.
