Believe it or not, the launch of the W124 in fall 1984 was far more problematic than that of the W201 some 2 years prior to it. Drivetrain "buck and yaw" (aka "Bonanza-Effekt") plagued early W124s' . This resulted in large protests by disgruntled taxi service proprietors culminating in a convoy of many hundreds of W124 taxicabs from all over Europe and as far as The Middle East that converged on Daimler-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. A massive recall program ensued. It wasn't until the MY 1988 facelift upon which the W124 became a genuinely good automobile. And even following that, the first il 6 cylinder 24 valve powerplants introduced in 1992 were not the most durable of engines. Rust issues plagued the W124/S124 in the first 4 years of its' model run.
I remember that, Dr Neifer drove a 230E and came back with "yes, its not what it should be, we will fix it" as a result of that outcry by the masses....back to the new A-Class, yeah nice and all that. I'll wait till I see the car in the flesh before I get too excited.
