IMO it isn't the proportions per say, its those stupid lines that mess up the look there.

M

Yep, that was my point. With that rear wheel arch, the car look like it has some kind of fat ass. It makes sense MB is dropping their huge rear arches in the new S-Class. I just wish they had done the same with the dropping shoulder line.

The problem also is, all those disjointed lines make the car appear "broken up" into portions. It makes the car look extremely stubby and not as long from the side profile. A complete antithesis to how especially a car in that sector should look: Exaggeratedly long and elegant.

IMO these photo's relays your words into a visual perspective of how "Exaggeratedly long and elegant" can be visually interpreted.

Edit: Mind the new R231 SL has a 'stubbier' appearance vs the R230

Blech, I hate the E Cab, lol. Then, I hate Convertibles, and I don't fully love the E-Coupe, I like it, but it doesn't have that true "it" factor to my senses. If it was truly based on the E platform, at E size (making it a 6er competitor, with a more luxurious and elegant length/size), I think some of the "cuteness" of it would go wayside, and it would look very rich.

I get what you're saying K/A, but honestly you and most people wouldn't know what the car was based on unless you were told. In a way I'm glad the "E-Class" Cabrio isn't based on the true E chassis (at last this this time), because the 6-Series is over priced. Though I do agree that it is more car than the E, so I guess in a sense you get what you pay for. I still ponder a loaded 650i Coupe, but I have to see where the M5 prices out first. Then there is the 4-door 6er to see in person next month.

Sometimes i think many of you are just clueless and OLD.:D

You are clearly well aware of the fact that it's only on a website/forum with male domination i.e GCF that you can use both clueless & OLD in one sentence and get away with it!?
If it was a female domination in terms of membership you would've been banned!

The standard R231 is going to be perfection..............come facelift time that is.

Now the SL63 AMG looks much better and thus is the one I would want now.

That car looks AMAZING from every angle.

Agree!

One of the main problems with the anti-wedge (and perhaps wedge shapes) of newer Mercedes is that thay are not very photogenic in some cases, meaning the graphics of the design produces a bowed plane where there are curves.
This is camera barrell distortion. The CLS really gets it bad sometimes because of the way it`s designed. It basically get judged from these barrell distortions because these images are not 3-dimensional like our vision.
When seen in real life 3-D, the car is stunning from any angle.

Some common cases of barrell distortions. (the newer MBs models usually get hit with the first example. That photo of the CLS63 has this type of distortion.)

Guys, we need to make another thread on wedge, anti-wedge shapes. This subject has little to do with this thread.

Yeah, true about the pricing. However, I don't get why M-B OR BMW couldn't design a true E/5 based Coupe (like the E-Coupe isn't and the 6 Series is) with a price tag that's around $5K more than the Sedan. With the E-Coupe, they went too far backwards from that, and with BMW, way too far forwards (in price).

With the E-Coupe, I would be able to tell right away simply because it's so small compared to the Sedan. It looks a lot more compact and "cute", whilst the E Sedan and 6 Coupe for that matter are sized to look more "serious". However, I'm "old school" I guess, I still like my M-B's to be slightly or at least relatively "big body". :D

Well the 650i is only about 11K more than the 550i, but the options is what makes the BMW turn into a 95-105K car in short order. Mercedes usually charges a 10K premium also from sedan to coupe, when the coupe is based on the same chassis as the sedan. BMW's option lists have gotten out of control lately. It is nothing for a 328i to sticker for 50K now.

M

I agree. I priced a 6er, and even a 640i Coupe with M-Pack and very minimal other Options came out to just shy of $90K.... and I was really skimping out on the amenities.

Ludicrous. At that price, unless you need or like the size or 3-Box aesthetic setup, that's 911 territory, and I'd go 911 all day long at those prices.

There must be something fundamentally wrong with a car when you need to put "barrel distortions" graphics in order to explain to other people, that is not an ugly car like they think. :D

No it just means the design process and technology employed is becoming increasingly sophisticated and a greater degree of 3 dimensionality can be incorporated into designs. This is what bangle was on about and BMW was at the forefront of this trend.

An example of this...It's obvious that the headlights on the SL are supposed to be viewed in 3D and their appearance on press shots and other in print media was not a prime consideration. The situation is similar with the front of the 1 series, where its snout is far less ungainly in person and actually works if specified correctly.

If that is the case, I'm really hoping to change my mind once I see an SL in person. I really want to like this car.

I'll say it again, good looking design doesn't need to be explained, dissected or anything. All you have to do is look at it. I told the BMW excuse makers the same thing in the past and I'll say it to my MB brethren. There was no need to explain or draw parallels about the previous SL's design. It was a gorgeous car and when a car is gorgeous there is nothing to be explained. There is a problem with the SL550 and those of us that don't just worship any and everything MB puts out, know this. I like the car, but the headlights and huge truck-like grille nearly, just nearly ruin it. The blocky front end couldn't be helped I guess due to Euro pedestrian regulations. The SL63 AMG on the other hand looks much, much better in pics. I've seen the SL550 twice now and I've liked it more and more each time, but the its truly up to the SL63 to save this design..............until the facelift comes.
