Exterior:
The BMW 135iS looks just like a normal 1 series, except BMW has fitted it with the M sport pack. You get different wheels different seats, and a different steering wheel. Exterior wise, it car looks real good. It's nice, small packaged pocket rocket. The M Sport Wheels offset the car very nicely. The subtle changes really make the car. As the car is coming towards you, you can tell it's something special. I hated the way the normal 135i looks. It looks...weird.(The difference between this and the new one is that the new 1 series makes your eyes burn when you look at it and the current one is actually tolerable.) While I'm not impressed with the new taillights, you can't deny it has made an improvement for the overall look of the car. The exhaust pipes look really good and are black, but they are still on one side and seem to stick out a little more then usual. They make a great noise, though. I'll save that for later.
Interior:
The interior of the car looks very purposeful. Quality is up there for a car in this price range, and while the car to some it looks 'sparten' I think of it as very 'driver oriented'. All the information you need to see is in the venter driver information display. The new wider screen is awesome, and the iDrive controller with the buttons surrounding it make it much easier to use. Everything is on the screen is actually eligible without glare. The iDrive controller is within reach as well so getting to the knob is easy. The quality of the materials is nice, but some of the things like the door panel seem a bit...cheap.Rear seating is well, a joke. Unless the person behind you has no legs, don't even bother trying to fit anyone in the back.Maybe that's why there's no cup holder back there. You see an M badge on the door sills, an M badge on the steering wheel, and an M badge on the stick of the transmission, telling you this car means business. I don't like it, but today, people like to feel they are in a more expensive car then they really are. Overall, the interior is a nice place to be in. I liked the way the M sport steering wheel felt.
The Drive:
The car drives...properly. Everything just feels so connected, so alive. The car falls flat on it's face around 5 1/2 thousand RPM but torque is almost instantaneous. The clutch and the shifter have always been my problem with BMW, though(This has been fixed on the F30). The E9x generation clutch and shifter never felt good. The clutch bites too high and shifter feels like a plunger. It's horrible. There were times I questioned what gear I was in because the shifts felt rubbery, and lackluster. The exhaust note just makes you want to push more and more though. This car doesn't 'fart' as much as it pops and crackles. Let off the gas in 3rd and just listen to the symphony that is the exhaust. BMW REALLY should have made a 1 series CSL because with this car, you don't need a radio when you have that glorious exhaust note to listen to. I never got to get the car past 4th but I was doing around 45 to 50 mph. The car steering is very precise and it seems to tuck in when you want it to. The short wheelbase of the car really helps you maneuver the car. The car is very responsive when you're behind the wheel. You tell it what to do, and it will gladly oblige. The suspension isn't horrible for day to day either. Yeah, it's a bit harsh for those big potholes, but it's a 'sports coupe'.
Overall:
I walked away really impressed with this car. I can actually say it's a car that I'd suggest and drive myself. The intoxicating exhaust and the 'there' feeling from the car really makes it ideal for someone who wants to be a backroad warrior on the weekends, but also wants to a car to be livable day to day.
I really like this car.
