LOS ANGELES — The Lamborghini Murciélago is due for a comprehensive makeover, and this illustration gives us an idea of what a new car might look like. Is this the Murciélago that we might see at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show? Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann likes to surprise us.

With the recently introduced 2010 Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SuperVeloce, the supercar enthusiasts in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, have taken their firm's V12-powered flagship just about as far as it can go. Introduced in 2001 relatively soon after Audi assumed control of the company in 1998, the all-wheel-drive Murciélago is actually very much a relic of the company's past. Built on a separate production line from the Audi-engineered Gallardo, the hand-built Murciélago actually has a lot in common with the Lamborghini Diablo, which was introduced in 1990 when the company was owned by Chrysler. Meanwhile the heavy, complicated 6.5-liter V12 has its roots in Lamborghini's origins in the 1960s.

What we see here is an illustrated look at a Murciélago that reflects the design language introduced by the Lamborghini Gallardo, itself introduced in 2003. The car's angular look expresses Lamborghini's aggressive persona while maintaining the unique, cab-forward look of the original Lamborghini Countach, first seen as a showcar clear back in 1971. But the real question will be whether the new Murciélago becomes more like the Gallardo under the skin as well.

More stringent air-emissions regulations in both Europe and America seem to require the adaptation of direct injection, a technology that Audi has pioneered. The engine itself seems likely to be a V12, more for marketing reasons than performance ones, as this configuration is required to keep Lamborghini's identity unique. At the same time, the Audi R8 platform presents a promising alternative, as it shares the Gallardo's cost-effective modular construction, while its longer wheelbase helps it assume the dimensions of a flagship. Countach-style scissor doors are a given, and lightweight bodywork is a strong possibility.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann is well aware of the need to keep his company in the news, and his strategy over the past several years has included a succession of specialty models designed for high-profile introduction at major auto shows. Although Lamborghini maintained its profitability in the first six months of 2009 despite the economic downturn, the company delivered only 825 cars compared to the 1,309 it sold during the same period in 2008. A styling study of a 2012 Lamborghini Murciélago could be a real newsmaker at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.

Looks reventonish with hard edges..
Should be a stunner..
I hope it looses alot of weight though:)

That's one of the main focus points, and the biggest reason to replace the Murci. They will probably o for an aluminium space frame, or maybe even CF, but that's maybe (?) too expensive.

I seriously doubt Lamborghini would have a carbon fibre tub as Lamborghini and the Audi-Volkswagen group has very little expertise on carbon fibre tubs. The Bugatti Veyron carbon fibre tub is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too expensive and special for even Lamborghini to use.

I think the next generation Lamborghinis will all have aluminium spaceframe monocoques.

Lol the article was 15 seconds of reading and only on picture...
Still this is so exciting for DaSilva this is his favorite brand...
but why have they melted the Murcielago front on the Gallardo and
made it LWB ? :D J/K....

As long as the car goes on a dieat loosing about 250 kg then I am
happy ... maybe they loose more since the OLD V12 engine
is no longer there and switched for a lightweight.
Also I want to see some extrodinary new design wheels.
I really do hope they make a brand new interior
cause the old layout is really old...

:t-cheers: btw black camo in the winter ? LOL B2 Stelth bomber

^Ohh god yes please..
Thats the Diablo Reborn..

Spy Shots: Lamborghini Jota set to replace Murcielago in 2011

Nine years ago the Lamborghini Murcielago replaced the Diablo as the marque's biggest bull, and in the automotive world – even in the rarified supercar realm – that's a lifetime and a half. Given the Murcie's age and the planet's ever-tightening emissions standards, it should come as no surprised that Lamborghini is hard at work on the Murcielago's successor. And along with a new name, the Jota will pack more power, less weight and a range of high-tech appointments.

Although the camouflage doesn't divulge much in the way of the Jota's exterior, expect certain elements of the Reventon to carry over to the largest Lambo. However, we suspect that advanced aerodynamics (and likely some active elements) will find their way onto the Jota, toning down Lamborghini's patented extreme styling (think McLaren MP4-12C with more creases and LEDs).

More important than the exterior (or the interior, which will reportedly ditch the offset driving position), is the all-new V12 nestled amidships. Early reports indicate that the new 7.0-liter V12 will put out over 700 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque to a new seven-speed automated manual transmission, with a sequential 'box with the same number of ratios available as an option. Lamborghini has apparently deemed the use of a dual-clutch tranny to be too much of a hastle, and as reported previously, a traditional gated manual won't find its way into future Lambos.

With a curb weight of around 3,300 pounds, it's safe to assume that the carbon fiber chassis Jota will be able to break the 60 mph mark in around three seconds, hit 100 mph in around six ticks and top out at 220 mph. In keeping with recent tradition, all-wheel drive will be standard – this time an adaption of Audi's Quattro system – complete with a new torque-vectoring differential measuring power to the rear wheels.

Considering the current pace of development and Lamborghini's penchant for unveiling a new model at every major auto show, the Jota should make its debut later this year at the Paris Motor Show or sometime in early 2011, with sales beginning in the middle of next year.

*If there is another Jota thread, please combine this thread with that one.

What an enormous engine, AMG is said to reach a similar figures with 4 cylinders and 2 litres less.

the wide exhaust could just be used for testing, I think it will adapt the 670SV type of exhaust. Can't wait to see this car shape up

I have a feeling the scissor doors will be gone
