XJ 2010 Jaguar XJ Series (Spy pics & info)

The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across four basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Jaguar is only months away from revealing next-generation XJ saloon, which is scheduled for a debut on July 9th at a special presentation in London before going on sale by the end of the year. We’ve already had a glimpse at the final version following the release of an official teaser at last week’s Shanghai Motor Show, and now a prototype has been spotting racking up some laps at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit.

The new XJ will be the first model feature the next-generation of Jaguar's aerospace-inspired aluminum body architecture, and it will be available with the carmaker’s latest 3.0L V6 turbodiesel and 510hp (380kW) 5.0L supercharged petrol V8. A plug-in hybrid variant is also rumored to be launched one year after the regular model, though no confirmation has been made on this yet.

As indicated by the past teaser shot, Jaguar designers have focused on alleviating many of the current XJ’s criticisms – namely the outdated styling and lack of engine options. One insider who had seen concept sketches for the car described it as looking like the C-XF’s features had been draped over an Aston Martin Rapide.

Previous spy shots revealed that the headlights will likely share some XF traits, though the rear could get fully-modern LED units of a unique design, possibly sharing hints of the Bentley Continental GT Flying Spur – one of the cars Jaguar would eventually like to rival with its new XJ.

High-tech features inside are said to include pressure sensing buttons, combined with backlit glass panels and the retracting transmission selector knob used in the XF.

I hope it isn't just an enlarged XF.

M

Won't be. The floating roof, bangle butt and more upright nose will make the XF look like a kitten. This car will make the Flying Spur look like dull English bread and it fits in perfectly on that ladder of large saloons.

S-Class: Conservative
A8: Neo-Conservative
7-Series: Sporty Luxury
XJ: Dynamic Luxury
Panamera: Neo-Luxury
Rapide: Ultimate Lifestyle

So there will practically be a car that suit everyone taste. The Jag has high versatility in that it will be offered in both SWB and LWB form. All I pray for is that they haven't exaggerated with blue LEDs in the cabin.

Is that really it or am I looking at Photochops of concepts and XFs and XJ guesswork?

If it is the real deal then I'm marginally disappointed; the rear looks particularly jarring and French car-like.

Ja - thanks - I gathered as much but was wondering if somehow Car, for once, had stumbled on a proper scoop.

Too bad... Anyhoo, I think the job is fairly thorough - it's probably quite close to what the real XJ will look like given the proportion relative to the overhead teaser shot.
