For MB design standards yes, especially the CLS which was a significant departure from what we usually expect from them. But in terms of the automotive industry as a whole I don't think they are all that innovative mainly because they like to play it safe most of the time.
They took a design risk with the CLS and it paid off. Same cannot be said for the R-class though.
I don't think that any one manufacturer is the leader. There are a number of company's who are the trendsetters.. but an outright leader I don't think is possible in today's dynamic market where customer tastes in terms of design are so varied.
And in my unbiased opinion, Mercedes design is still innovative. The CLS, R171 SLK and the new S-Class and CL-Class are pretty radical for MB design standards.![]()
