FORMULA 1 ING MAGYAR NAGYDIJ 2008

The first Hungarian Grand Prix (Hungarian: Magyar Nagydíj) was held on June 21, 1936 over a 3.1-mile (5.0 km) track laid out in Népliget[1], a park in Budapest. The Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union, and Ferrari teams all sent three cars and the event drew a very large crowd. However, politics and the ensuing war meant the end of Grand Prix motor racing in the country for fifty years.

A major coup by Bernie Ecclestone, the 1986 Hungarian Grand Prix was the first Formula One race to take place behind the Iron Curtain. Held at the twisty Hungaroring near Budapest, the race has been a mainstay of the racing calendar. Run in the heat of a central European summer, it also holds the distinction of being the only current Grand Prix venue that had never seen a wet race up until the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix. The first Grand Prix saw 200,000 people spectating, although tickets were expensive at the time. Today, the support is still very enthusiastic, particularly from Finns.

Grand Prix History
Hungary first hosted a grand prix in the 1930s, but following the Second World War and the building of the Iron Curtain it was not until the 1960s that motorsport began to find a place in the country.

At the start of the 1980s there was a general wish for a Grand Prix to be held behind the Iron Curtain and negotiations took place with the Soviet Union with a view to a race being held in Moscow. In the summer of 1983 however, the attention of the Formula One decision makers turned away from Moscow and towards Budapest in Hungary, whose national sporting authority was keen to put the country back on the map of global motorsport.

At first a street race through Budapest was suggested, but in the end the decision was taken to build a brand new circuit in a valley 19 kilometres outside Budapest. The valley provided natural vantage points for spectators and in 1985 work began on the Hungaroring. The track opened in 1986 and it held its first Formula One event in August that year. It was a huge success and almost 200,000 fans showed up.

Although tight and twisty, the circuit has been known to throw up some great races, the most memorable being Thierry Boutsen's win in 1990, beating Ayrton Senna by 0.3 seconds, and of course the 1997 race where Damon Hill in the Arrows sensationally passed Michael Schumacher's Ferrari only to be denied the win by mechanical failure on the very last lap.

Mclaren weekend again, much to the disappointment of Ferrari fans like me.

F2008 to sport shark fin in Hungary
Wednesday 30th July 2008

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa's Ferraris will sport the "shark fin" engine cover at this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Despite running the new design for just one day during testing in Jerez last week, Massa felt it had enough benefits to go straight onto the F2008 for this weekend's race in Budapest.

"Luca Badoer will carry out a shakedown at Fiorano of the cars that will be used in Budapest. For the first time on a race weekend, the F2008 will be fitted with, amongst other new components, the 'anvil' engine cover after (Felipe) Massa felt in Jerez that it brought some benefits," Ferrari said in their team preview.

Ferrari's main rivals McLaren also tested the new shark fin ahead of the German Grand Prix, but opted not to use it during the race.

More like Hamilton weekend. He was dominant last year and will be so at Hungary this year as well, especially now when his victory momentum is in full swing.

yeah i think heikki needs to catch a wake up and pick up the pace i no he is still new to the team and stuff but its about time he does something in the races and if the car is still as good as its been in past two races he should be on the podium atleast he should try make the podium

Now with confirmation of Kovalainen's extended contract, hopefully he will fully concentrate on the race ahead. So heres hoping for a Kova win. As for Hamilton, I have this little guy in the back of my head wispering that a engine failure will occur. :D

Yes this little Hamilton in the back of your head is talking about lap 18, Kimi's engine will be like the 4th of July, right infront of Massa. Causing Kimi and Massa to meet up at a high rate of speed.

I probably should have worded it better. I meant that I have a fealing that Hamilton's engine will expire after the recent and so called "random" engine checks.

I know what you meant:usa7uh:

If his engine does blow it will be on the victory lap:t-roses:

Pretty much expected but Hamilton was more dominant than expected, he even manged to improve on his own time in Q3. Hopefully Heikki will hold up for a Mclaren 1-2.

well, looking at things, Massa might get the jump on Kova, since he's on teh cleaner side of the track.

as for Kimi, only rain and SC situation can help him now. Monza ain't far away, and race by race, Massa's looking like the only hope for Ferrari.

From what we've seen this season rain would just make matters worse for Ferrari but a decent accident could help them shuffle things up. I'm impressed by Toyota's advancement, they are doing really well now Trulli in particular.

Really bad luck for Massa! :eusa_doh: Guess Ferrari have to work on their reliability issue for the next 3 weeks.

Well done Timo Glock. That was all him!

IMO, Glock deserved that victory, and not Kova. Glock was flawless, came under huge pressure from Kimster, had a fire in the pits, and yet he brought a Toyoda on the podium...
