Chapter 45. Customer Racing: BMW M Motorsport Brings Factory-Built Race Cars to North America
Since its founding in 1972, BMW Motorsport has supplied a bevy of race-ready cars to customers worldwide, but few of those cars were suitable for racing in North America. On this continent, sanctioning bodies tend to impose their own, often idiosyncratic rules, which excluded nearly all of BMW Motorsport’s customer-racing touring and GT cars. While BMW of North America’s factory team was adapting Euro-spec racing cars to IMSA specification, private customers who wanted to race BMWs had to convert street cars into race cars. BMW Motorsport didn’t want to sell cars like the endurance-racing Z4 M Coupe or E92 M3 GT4 in markets without an official structure for parts and technical support. Since BMW NA had no such structure, US racers...

BMW M Motorsport in the FIA WEC: Season finale in the deserts of Bahrain.
Sakhir. The hopes for a strong conclusion to the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) did not fully materialise for BMW M Motorsport. The season finale, the ‘8 Hours of Bahrain’ (BRN), proved challenging in both the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories. Over the course of eight hours, it was difficult to fight for the top positions. However, Sheldon van der Linde (RSA), René Rast (GER) and Robin Frijns (NED) managed an impressive recovery drive in the #20 Shell BMW M Hybrid V8 of BMW M Team WRT, moving up from 15th on the grid to finish eighth. The #15 BMW M Hybrid V8, driven by Kevin Magnussen (DEN), Raffaele Marciello (SUI) and Dries Vanthoor (BEL), retired in the final hour due to a defect. In the LMGT3 class, which had recently...

Hockenheim. The dream of a fourth DTM drivers' title for René Rast (GER) has been shattered. In the final race of the season at the Hockenheimring (GER), the 38-year-old had excellent chances in the showdown for the championship after a strong start, running in second place. However, a collision in the first lap ended all his hopes. On Friday, ahead of the race weekend, Rast had announced his provisional retirement from DTM. Marco Wittmann (GER) shone in the Sunday race, securing a podium finish in second place during a dramatic season finale. After finishing seventh on Saturday, Rast started Sunday’s race from fifth position but quickly moved up to second place in the first few corners thanks to a brilliant start. However, at the...

Nelson Piquet grabbed the steering wheel on two days, first completing a shake-down in both cars and then doing a few laps of...
