2 Series BMW 2er Gran Coupe Speculation

The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since the year 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun-off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series.
Bmw could offers 2er coupe cabrio & g coupe only with awd.. Maybe with a center differential to get a rear biased system but built on ukl

Plausible is it may be it's just not the same thing. The writing's on the wall: whilst compact + RWD = tangible benefits in driving enjoyment, BMW are forced - by way of economic necessity - to engineer UKL to compete on a level playing field.

Looks more Gran Turismo than Gran Coupe.
One thing stands out here and that is how the render is extremely close to the next 3er render which under FWD they share BMW design elements but do not try to look like a facsimile of each other so both drivetrains are kept separate in every way possible.

Got to evaluate a 2 Series 4 door Grand Coupe today

"Because I own a 228i, got selected to go to a auto consumer research event to day to look a new model cars. So the primary car they had us evaluate was a prototype of a new 2 series 4 door Grand Coupe. Sorry, no cell phone were allowed, so no pictures.

Other than the obvious of it being longer and having 2 more doors, the front and rear had an all new design. Rear design kind of took some design features from the new 7 series, but moves the license plate to bumper, off the deck lid, giving the rear a cleaner look. Taillights almost go accross rear deck lid, with black trim piece, with logo in the center. Very nice look. Dual exhaust with pipes coming out from both left and right side.

Interior was all new design. Instrument cluster is now LCD and has been merged with Connected Drive LCD, for one continuous LCD from front of driver to center of dash. Start button has been moved down next to gear selector and there is an electronic parking break. Gear selector has gotten smaller and shorter, giving the center console a clean look. There was also a new frameless rear view mirror. Sunroof was enlarge to open to rear seat.

Bad news is new 2 Grand Coupe is front wheel drive.

For the 2 Grand Coupe evaluation we also evaluated a MB CLA, Audi A3, and BMW 3 next to it for comparison.

I also got to evaluate a prototype of the new 4 series. I thought it was butt ugly. They put a huge Audi style front grill on it, with the license plate right in the middle. The current 4 sitting next to it looked much better."

Wow - that's a huge shock.

If this does reach production in that FWD format, all hope will be lost

Real shock is FWD ... For me ... Scott any input on this information please

Because he used the word "grand" I'm hoping he is referring to the FWD 1 series sedan...

Indeed it's a little bit confusing because in the title of the start page they have written "... 2-series compact sedan" and not Gran Coupe.

Edit: But when they mean not the Gran Coupe but the Sedan then it must be referred to the next generation Sedan because details we have already seen in interior spy shots are different to what the user has seen in the clinic.

Very true, I didn't think about that. We need some clarification asap!

Indeed. Other users from the other BMW site are also a little bit confused about what the user has seen in the clinic .
Maybe he has seen a non-driving concept car for evaluation purposes, means an user from the other site.
An other user said, an insider has given him the info the 2 GC will get RWD for 100 %.

No question, everybody can write everything.
Maybe the one user was never in this clinic, maybe the other user has no insider infos.
We can only collect the different infos and we have to wait for further infos.

The user who reported at the other BMW site from his clinic visit has edited his postings and deleted the text.
At this time there is still no reaction from other users.

LOL, it is so true a FWD 2er, especially after the fantastic first gen 2er, would be a huge downgrade, but it might give us a few interesting moments to read the reactions on the internet. A FWD BMW sedan with a huge LCD screen that merges both the speedo and the nav screen. That would be some serious crow to be eaten...

Sadly, I would say Audi and VW are the only brands making cars that can compete with their respective big brothers in terms of quality. Probably because FWD has always been their thing. But when I see how the FWD MBs and lately the FWD BMWs look and feel from the inside...

At least I hope BMW does not increase the 3er price too much to make room for this new 2er GC.

Btw, interesting reference to the new 4er, I guess he is refering to the car having the 3.0 CS Concept grille witht he license plate in the middle (as @EnI hinted).

BMW should have never gave us a taste of compact RWD vehicles, that we all love. They are leaving us with no replacements.

If the 1/2 series were initially introduced as FWD vehicles, there would be no comparison, and we wouldn't feel at loss for receiving an inferior (in driving terms) replacement.
