I believe this is quite an interesting topic for those of us who find the devil to be in the details. A spirited driving requires the best possible control of all three pedals, as the art of double clutching and rev matching a downshift requires precision, other than knowledge of your vehicles gear ratios difference.
In my opinion, the correct choice of shoes doesn't make a huge difference while driving, but it's one of those little sub-details that differentiate "great" from "absolutely perfect".
Given its summer, my top choice for driving shoes is leather mocasins, but only when the sole of the shoe raps up at the rear side. I prefer my driving shoes to have a soft and narrow sole, as to get a solid feel of exactly what part of the pedal you are pushing, without accidentally pushing both the break and loud pedal at the same time. A good example of what I have chosen is this:
Actually this is exactly (make, model and colour) of the shoe I described above. These days I am warming up to actually buying a pair of Sparco driving shoes, but I am afraid that once I step out of the car I will look like a dick.
The good thing about the above shoes is that they much my everyday type of outfit, a pair of (most of the time dark) jeans with a single coloured polo shirt or a long sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up a bit. The only part that doesn't fit with this outfit is the beige Volvo or the almost fallen apart Clio.

So, what's your choice of driving shoes?
