I would challenge BMW to come up with first ever hologram-based license plate that only needs to be shown where local street laws applied. In fact, future EV may replace that front grilles area as one large screen and display what ever it sees fit, for instance, marquees with GET OUT OF MY WAY ...

What was the worst car @ Frankfurt this year? That's difficult because of the low attendance of manufacturers.
I have to say, the Mercedes hall was just as disappointing as the BMW stand. MB always take over the Festhalle part of the Messe, and it was quite pathetic how few cars they actually had on display. You'd be forgiven for thinking you weren't actually at a motor show. What cars MB did have on display were put in the area that is normally used by Smart.
The VAG hall contained Audi, Porsche Lambo, Seat, Skoda. That did at least resemble a motor show, and it blew the other two German groups out of the water.
I know why this is happening, and I guess it will only get worse in the future. In fact, I'm not even bothering with Geneva 2020, and it will be the first time I've not been to the annual event in 15 years.
I was asked by a teenager who was working on the MB display what I thought of it this year, and I told them it was completely boring. They explained they were trying to attract young people who maybe weren't so interested in the actual cars themselves, and more concerned about the environment and connectivity. I said "but this is a car show".

Yeah I agree it was not as impressive as before.. same size hall but very airy and artsy.. I will never forget the year they released the SLR and the Vision CLS. It was insane more or less like the Mercedes museum but on the roll.
Still I feel it was relatively strong cause everyone has downgraded.. so the gap remains in my eyes.
Seeing the various obvious renders that are swarming around there with the kidneys in medium and small size, there is much talk that it is more beautiful like this and the only thing that is clear to see them (after seeing the real concept), is that with the smallest loses all the presence, importance and character.

Is the BMW Concept 4 an unfortunate looking coupe or an attractive car bogged down by an ungainly grille? Thanks to artist Mike Maravilla we can now confirm the latter case is true.

Maravilla was not content to merely update the Concept 4’s front end, though, so he also swapped out the concept car’s wheels and paint with reckless abandon. Personally, we are partial to his green Concept 4 wearing multi-spoke HRE wheels.

When I saw the first photo of the SLR in that year I remember thinking that it was the best thing I had seen in my life in every way (not just talking about cars) and I still believe it, it was like a break, a before and after, for things like that I've always admired Mercedes.
Even that beauty was misunderstood in its time and also by the front !, there was a lot of journalist and people who said it looked like a penis.
That's why my respects for cars like this 4 series despite criticism, and I have fun seeing the artists who take the opportunity to render as it could be (with the front of the 8 series), as if in the BMW design department which has more than 300 designers, they would not have contemplated that.

I agree with you but remember that a great idea can come from one single individual. It doesn't take 300 people to design a car. This goes for everything in life but especially in design. There are few great designers and a lot of operational people. Just look at the design teams of the manufacturers. The decisions and ideas come from no more than a couple of individuals. Example of a team for one product: (2) Interior, (2) Exterior, (1) Exterior apprentice, (2) Materials.

Indeed. This was 2019 even up to 2017 they went upwards to the dome and filled the entire hall.
This was disappointing.
Could be worse. Some of the Virtue Signalling was beyond parody.
Did not convince the protesters though they did not look at all e-positive.
Possibly the worst IAA in history.
