Our 2002 Mercedes E320 recently reached 100,000 km. I was in Munich at the time and didn't have the opportunity to photograph this most glorious moment! Since then my old folks have been taking it around for accumulating more mileage. I'm in Mühldorf this weekend for a photography project with the local museum and late in the afternoon I had the chance to take her for a spin and take some shots. She's a bit dirty so don't let the looks deceive you.
The car has been solid overall. From day one (July 2, 2002), this baby has never missed a beat and is still holding up excellently. The W211 E-Class had a reputation for electrical unreliability, which was never the case with our model. It's been bulletproof since day.
The interior is as good as new (a bit dirty in the pictures) and there are no audible cabin rattles. The cloth-leather seats have held up well with no cracks visible. Despite being involved in one accident, the body of the car has held up well and not fallen apart after 100,000 km like the idiots at Consumer Reports claim.
The fuel economy has always been excellent, and now with new winter tires we're seeing an average of 9.1 L / 100 km (25.8 mpg) if the car is driven normally. I remember the days on Car and Driver when everyone told me the 224-horsepower engine was so underpowered - what a load of crap. I wish those fools were with me today when I had the car on the Autobahn and slammed it storming effortlessly towards 210 km/h (the maximum the winter tires are rated at). The engine is still smooth and refined, though the newer 3.5 V6 from Mercedes does blow it away in all criteria.
The 5-speed automatic transmission is still a joy to drive. She can read your mind and usually does everything right. Should you want to engage your own gears, she is quick to respond to input. Overall, she's still smooth and reinforces that long-distance cruiser reputation the E-Class has.
VERDICT: The Wimmer family is very happy with the car and it will continue to serve in our family for a long time.
