5 Series ***Wimmer does it again: BMW 5-Series "Werkswagen"***

The BMW 5 Series is an executive car manufactured and marketed by BMW since 1972. The car is sold as either a sedan or, since 1991, a station wagon (marketed as "Touring"). A 5-door fastback (marketed as "Gran Turismo") was sold between 2009 and 2017. Each successive generation has been given an internal G-code designation since 2017. Previously, a F-code designation was used between 2010 and 2016, while an E-code designation was used between 1972 and 2010. These are used to distinguish each model and generation from each other.

So we've all seen the new BMW 5-Series in the photos, unmasked. But seeing a new car in the flesh is what really matters. I've seen the new 5er before in the streets in its testing stages. Today, however, I saw it up close from within the 118i while heading down to Mühldorf.

I spotted the car coming unto my lane from a side road on the right. At first I mistook it for a 3-Series but then I saw the by now familiar "Werkswagen" markings on the side. By then it dawned on me that this is the new 5er.

It immediately pulled in behind me and stayed there for some time. I was lucky to have my camera on the passenger seat next to me so I was blindly snapping away at the car. These four photos below are the best of them all. The last three shots show him overtaking me as we were nearing the Autobahn. I was planning on taking more shots of the car on the Autobahn but by then he had gunned the car and I had zero chances of catching up to him in 118i. I am not sure what those twin exhausts represent but it might have been a 535i or a 535d (the BMW guys will probably know).

The new 5er looks surprisingly small from the outside. It could seriously pass for a slightly enlarged 3-Series in terms of size. The old E60 5-Series wasn't fat, but the new 5er makes it appear fat. It does look nice and those hood bulges I saw when I passed him don't look as huge in real life. These were my first impressions when I saw the car. :t-cheers:

That's just hot. What a car :bowdown: The backlight graphics are so beautiful, and the small part of the Angel eye is sexy :D

Look at the covered BMW badge at the rear, the twin exhausts and the fact that it had "Werkswagen" posted on its side.

Anyone smell a performance version here? Maybe this is the 535i / 535d undergoing some last tests before hitting the market!? Any BMW guys here have an idea what this could be?

It's probably a 530i or 530d, or maybe 525d/525i. Something like that, no performance version or something. This is a regular 5er like in the press shots, with only the badge taped off... 535i has one exhaust on each side, 535d no info yet, but will be for fall 2010, so some time off still strangely.

Let's wait for the bi-turbo diesel first. That's almost a year away, still.
And there already is 740d with 306 hp. The tri-turbo will either be called 45d or 50d, I guess....

A truly stunning car. I saw one in the flesh yesterday and have to admit that it's my favourite BMW so far. Lines, proportions, rear lights, everything is about perfect. Can't wait for the M5...

It's neither a 535i nor a 550i. So, it's one of the following models: 523i, 528i, 525d, 530d.

Best regards,
south
