So we've all seen the new BMW 5-Series in the photos, unmasked. But seeing a new car in the flesh is what really matters. I've seen the new 5er before in the streets in its testing stages. Today, however, I saw it up close from within the 118i while heading down to Mühldorf.
I spotted the car coming unto my lane from a side road on the right. At first I mistook it for a 3-Series but then I saw the by now familiar "Werkswagen" markings on the side. By then it dawned on me that this is the new 5er.
It immediately pulled in behind me and stayed there for some time. I was lucky to have my camera on the passenger seat next to me so I was blindly snapping away at the car. These four photos below are the best of them all. The last three shots show him overtaking me as we were nearing the Autobahn. I was planning on taking more shots of the car on the Autobahn but by then he had gunned the car and I had zero chances of catching up to him in 118i. I am not sure what those twin exhausts represent but it might have been a 535i or a 535d (the BMW guys will probably know).
The new 5er looks surprisingly small from the outside. It could seriously pass for a slightly enlarged 3-Series in terms of size. The old E60 5-Series wasn't fat, but the new 5er makes it appear fat. It does look nice and those hood bulges I saw when I passed him don't look as huge in real life. These were my first impressions when I saw the car.
