Who makes the best engines in the industry?

It depends what defines the best engine: reliability, outright performance, fuel economy or allrounder.

Could it be AMG? ;)

AMG won 4 International Engine of the Year awards since the performance category was introduced in 2003.
Followed by BMW with 3 wins, and Ferrari and Porsche with 1 each.

...and priced under $55,000. More expensive models incl AMGs don't qualify? The best for average cost? ;)

"To be eligible for the competition, each engine must be available in a regular-production U.S.-specification model on sale no later than first-quarter 2011 and in a vehicle priced no more than $55,000, a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle."

^^^^If that's the case, Ferrari and Porsche :D Respectively, their 4.5L V8 and 4.0L Flat-6 and the hp/liter they produce, well it's downright fantastic. They've consistently, over the period of their existence, made some of the best, storied engines.

If I had to say who makes the best overall engine line right now, I think it'd be a toss-up between BMW and Audi. Their mainstream diesel and petrol engines are solid....modern, efficient and produce prodigious amounts of power. They each have a new high-end turbo V8, which are both ridiculous. M-B has good engine line, but their petrol V6 is becoming long in the tooth. Honda used to produce solid engines but now they are either midpack when it comes to performance or efficiency....they need to up their game.

Now, if the OP was asking who historically has had made made the best engines that are more mainstream, well, I'll leave that to those more knowledgeable than me.

ANSWER:

Best all rounder manufacturer of modern, sustainable and technological advanced small and large capacity gasoline and diesel engines is without ANY doubt:-

BMW AG (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG / English: Bavarian Motor Works) of Munich in the Bavarian Provence of Germany and that folks is the long and short of this thread;)

:worshbmw:

AND if this was an exam I would have scored an A+ :usa7uh::D

Who are going to win 2012?
Maybe M5 F10 make it to the list as well or BMW's new upcoming superdiesel?

Could it be AMG? ;)

The blinking smily must mean it's a joke........right????
But since you are one of the most biased members this forum has ever seen.....I am not sure....

AMG...LMAO....they have made like 4 engines in their life, max. Probably even less. AMG used to be a ricer/tuner company a couple of years ago, before MB bought them. Have you forgotten about that???

AMG won 4 International Engine of the Year awards since the performance category was introduced in 2003.

Yeah, and BMW M had 22 wins since 2001.

Both are going to win. And the new 4 cylinder gasoline engine will win too. Lots of prizes for BMW this year, I'm looking forward to it!
But I am not so sure whether the new diesel will make it soon enough for that list...

Truth be said, BMW is still the best. I would just love them to step in the supercar game rival Porshce and Ferrari. They can really do all types of engine, from H2 to V16. The only engine they never had was I5.

But if the question was, what are my favorite engines right now my answer would be:

-Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0: 4.0l H6 500 PS
-Lexus LFA: 4.8l V10 560 PS
-Ferrari 599 GTO: 6.0l V12 670 PS

The Aston-Martin One-77' engine is just out of this world.

This is my bet of the winning BMW engines for 2012:

1.6l Turbo
2.0l Turbo
3.0l Turbo

After 4 years of consecutive winning, the S65 is going to leave its place to the new 3.8l H6 400 PS engine of the 911 Carrera S (991).

I am surprised the Lexus LFA's V10 did not win in the +4 liter category, it would deserve this title above any other performance engine.

We'll see. Maybe it will win Best New Engine, and overall in that category it will be the 5th win for the M3 V8

Hahahah yeah I've enjoyed the AMG joke too :)
BMW without any doubt... the thread is a bit pointless as we all know the answer :)

It was not even in the running. The only plausible rational explanation for not including was lack of mass production since it is only a 500 unit production run engine.

But, what you are saying happened in the Evo UK "best engine of the year 2010" where it won over 9 other exotics/supercar engines.
