^^^^If that's the case, Ferrari and Porsche Respectively, their 4.5L V8 and 4.0L Flat-6 and the hp/liter they produce, well it's downright fantastic. They've consistently, over the period of their existence, made some of the best, storied engines.

If I had to say who makes the best overall engine line right now, I think it'd be a toss-up between BMW and Audi. Their mainstream diesel and petrol engines are solid....modern, efficient and produce prodigious amounts of power. They each have a new high-end turbo V8, which are both ridiculous. M-B has good engine line, but their petrol V6 is becoming long in the tooth. Honda used to produce solid engines but now they are either midpack when it comes to performance or efficiency....they need to up their game.

Now, if the OP was asking who historically has had made made the best engines that are more mainstream, well, I'll leave that to those more knowledgeable than me.

AMG...LMAO....they have made like 4 engines in their life, max. Probably even less. AMG used to be a ricer/tuner company a couple of years ago, before MB bought them. Have you forgotten about that???

Both are going to win. And the new 4 cylinder gasoline engine will win too. Lots of prizes for BMW this year, I'm looking forward to it!
But I am not so sure whether the new diesel will make it soon enough for that list...

Truth be said, BMW is still the best. I would just love them to step in the supercar game rival Porshce and Ferrari. They can really do all types of engine, from H2 to V16. The only engine they never had was I5.

But if the question was, what are my favorite engines right now my answer would be:

-Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0: 4.0l H6 500 PS
-Lexus LFA: 4.8l V10 560 PS
-Ferrari 599 GTO: 6.0l V12 670 PS

The Aston-Martin One-77' engine is just out of this world.

It was not even in the running. The only plausible rational explanation for not including was lack of mass production since it is only a 500 unit production run engine.

But, what you are saying happened in the Evo UK "best engine of the year 2010" where it won over 9 other exotics/supercar engines.
