The previous CL, I believe, was Bruno Sacco's last design.

The current on isn't a failure. It will be interesting to see how the facelift addresses some of its issues.

No it was designed by an Australian, Peter Arcadipane.

The non AMG car does not photograph well. IRL its extremely elegant. With the AMG kit it becomes WICKED!

Well how else do you expect it to look in its most bland combination of silver exterior and basic 17 inch rims. I love the car with and without AMG kit like with ever car it come down to rims and colour. Go see your local MB dealer.

While I agree with you 100 percent, it's unacceptable that the car of this price and not to mention that it is top of the line coupe for MB CAN look this dull and boring. Those rims should never be offered in the first place.

I'll agree with the others. I wouldn't touch the regular version. Slap on the AMG kit and it comes one of the hottest GT's in the world...

Luw while i agree that the colour and rims combinaisons posted in the first pictures are really bad, i also think that you choosed very particular angles that hides the flaws of the design.

^Even the sexiest cars on the planet has it bad angles,so i don't think he did choose the better angles for the CL,the silver and 17 wheels are the worest ever for that car.A nice dark color and 19 rims and the CL is flaming hot

Sure I picked some hot shots, I'm an MB fan after all
Just like with the S-class the design error lays in the front bumper. The overall appearance of the car is very soft and harmonic and a more fierce front bumper would have balanced the overall appearance. There's simply too much softness in the front end design, which is why many appreciate the AMG package. That's something I hope MB will correct with the facelift because it's one very gorgeous car.

I don't think it looks dull .......but of course it looks plain next to the AMG kit.

The standard AMG kit does look good because it is not too fussy .....but the CL65 gets close to being over done.

When you buy the CL, you're buying exclusivity. It's more exclusive than both the S and SL. I don't think buyers of this car are worried about its looks at all. I'd take this "boring" and "dull" car any day.

Yes, we all know the CL will look dull and boring when it's painted with silver paint, is equiped with the smallest rims available, while Airmatic is set to "monster truck," and the picture is taken with a camera phone. Good job for starting a ruckus over nothing thread starter!

Well actually, not really, those are probably the worst pictures I've seen of the CL. I think the CL with classic cladding will be more appreciated as it ages particularly the CL600 with the larger 600 rims and visible tailpipes.

When you buy the CL, you're buying exclusivity. It's more exclusive than both the S and SL. I don't think buyers of this car are worried about its looks at all. I'd take this "boring" and "dull" car any day.

Even though it may be somewhat exclusivity, don't discount aesthetics when evaluating the CL (&S) owners. I personally would not buy a CL without the "sport package", and I think the current sales of kit optioned CL & S indicate agreement with my thinking. The 2009 SL available only with the sport package is probably another example of its popularity. Then again, after everyone eventually has the sport package, it will probably become more vogue not to have it!

The AMG Kit is not standard for a reason.Some folks like it simple,elegant and subtle,the standard CL fits this image.Those who like it a little more aggressive and sporty will opt for the AMG kit.

The AMG package is great ...but does reduce the image of refinement and elegance in favour of aggression. The top Mercedes coupé attracts a much broader group of buyers than it did in the past. It was once a very conservative segment -- but there are a lot of buyers now who have more ostentatious tastes.

The standard CL can be a very bland car with the wrong wheels and color. A lot of new designs are color sensitive. Back in the day a Benz looked the part in any color. So yes I think the standard car is bland, but it isn't a lost cause because the right wheels and the right color will help. That said I wouldn't have one either without the AMG sportswear. It seems to me that they designed the car around the AMG kit instead of vice versa.

Feel sorry for the person that bought the car Standard.....Itsridiculous a car at this price needs a rimor sport pack to look nice..all im saying is they should have at least made it a lookerlike the S or New C classs, which stilllooks good in standard trim....

The biggest problem with the CL is its cab-forward proportions. In my opinion this is sacrilegious for a large, rear-wheel drive grand tourer. It somehow embues the CL with a lead-footed, nose-heavy stance - like it always standing on its brakes as opposed to lifting its skirt and hurtling into the distance.

I am the first to admit that the CL has several design flaws ...there are some aspects of it (like the rear styling) which I would rather not look at ...but the proportions are dictated by its purpose -- this is still a 4-seat luxury barge -- no amount of AMG treatment is going to be able to disguise that.

This pretty sums it up. AMG and standard have a very different look.

I, personally, prefer the standard one. Of course, with the good rims and the good colour.

Any car needs good rims and a nice colour to look really good. The standard CL is splendid in its understated elegance. The AMG is aggressive, wicked and impressive.

To each his own, but kudos for MB to make a car that looks that good, has so much place inside, and looks so different just by changing the bumpers and grille!

Without question I agree with you regarding its purpose. But that doesn't change the fact that its proportions - despite being dictated by function - are imperfect.

1. Why is the CL a luxury four seater? Isn't an S-Class good enough?
2. No... people want something a little more stylish but with ample seating for four.
3. Step up the CL.
4. Which isn't stylish; so back to step 1.

2. It's not about people needs,it's about MB always offering a large coupe off the S-Class ages ago and it must have a high end coupe as the leading premium luxury brand.
