Poll Who currently makes the best 6 and 8 cylinder petrol engines?

I’m interested to see whether brand bias and reality converge. To me, the e-boosted straight sixes by MB are the undisputed leaders for tech and performance. The Audi/MB V8’s are a close call. And BMW are (slightly) sucking the hind tit on petrol engines today, despite leading in the diesel department - but only with the 6 cylinder diesels. What are your thoughts?

What about the new Mercedes 6 Cylinder Diesels?

I'm not particularly impressed by the refinement of the 3.0D in my sister in laws new X3.

The new OM 656 I6 diesel engines are currently state of the art. Refinement, fuel efficiency and as clean as it gets.

6cyl: tie btwn Benz I-6 and BMW I-6.
V8: AMG 4.0L, though Porsche's (Audi's) TT-V8 is a close second. BMW would be tied for number one if it had better acoustics, but there's no lack of performance from them.

My favorite German V8 of all time: AMG 6.2L....NA monster.

I think the poll refers to a range of engines in different state of tune but as a single unit, I agree. There is no finer factory V8 in production today.

And also finer in what manner, because the V8 in the 720S has very impressive power characteristics, without it is lacking in the emotional department.
Also I think that the B58 ( the new version of BMWs in line 6) may not be as fancy as the new MB in line six, but IMHO it is still the better engine.

Cute to say the least. But surely they are forgetting the I6 of the M3/4, which is something Mercedes will never be able to make.
But I got to say, yeah, MB's brand new I6 is more or less on par with the old BMW engines. The new M340i will take care of that though.

I am very curious to see the weight comparison of the new MB in line 6 and the last update of the B58 BMW engine. I wouldn't be surprised if there is 40-45 kg difference.

How do you know what Mercedes can and can't make? What makes the I6 in the M340i better than the I6 from Mercedes?
