Discuss The long wait for a BMW M5 and other makes & models

How f'ing hard is it to build a couple of chip factories one might wonder?

Very hard apparently. Hard enough for major industries to shut down. Absolutely batshit crazy, and we can safely blame ALL our politicians again. Those motherf#cking wankers.
Semi-conductor wafers are produced in facilities that are dust proof high tech labs rather than big boxy warehouses that can be built in 6 months.

A semi conductor factory cost $7-15 billion to build over 3-5 years. Some of the specialist machines used in the production are $25-100m each!

We are not talking off the shelf hardware but bespoke scientific machinery that need specialist staff and training to setup and run.

Long story short, they is no short term solution to this problem.

This was an interesting article explaining why the chip shortage has a significant impact on car production

Sand shortage, anyone?

I hear it's a good time to trade-in as used cars are fetching good prices but I think I'll stick with that bird-in-the-hand philosophy for now.

I sold my X5 a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't planning to but I got an offer I couldn't refuse. It barely lost any value in two and a half years.

I've heard this semi-conductor shortage will last well into 2023.
