Which would you rather? '07-ish 911 Turbo or New 991 Carrera (saying same price)?

Which would you rather BUY in "real life", if you were spending around 80K?

What about a new Cayman S? Its lighter and better to drive than a 911, a remap would easily bring it past base 991 performance, and considerably cheaper to boot. If four seats is a requirement, a Jag XK would be a very good choice. Drop-dead gorgeous looks, slightly more comfortable day to day than either of the porsches, but also less involving to drive. Or you could wait for the new M4/435i

I think you are confusing the 996 GT3 with the 997.1 GT3 as far as livability is concerned.

From what I understand, 997.1 GT3 was made a lot of daily drivable thanks to PASM adaptive shocks. Yes???

I was looking at GT3's.... VERY sweet and man would that be a helluva car to own. It's about the exact same price as a 997.1 Turbo, if not maaaybe a little more accessibly "cheaper". The GT3 is a dedicated Track Car though, very unlivable.... which is fine, I don't want the car to be a workhorse or anything, but the high strung motor, suspension, and overall nature might make it a hard car to own and maintain. The Turbo IMO is a better mix of all worlds. The GT3 definitely gets extra cool points for being rare, it's a bonafide Exotic as far as I'm concerned.

996 GT3 will never be redone. The 997.1 GT3, on the other hand, could be said to be the last of the truly great. I have yet to drive one, but my 996 friends keep telling me the first generation is the 997 GT3 to have. Come to think of it, that was said of the 996 GT3:s as well...

Really. So the early 997 GT3 is the one to get outta the gt3's? I would LOVE something as brutal and exotic as a gt3, but from what I hear the high strung motor isn't exactly Gonna be as reliable as a turbo. Also, doesn't it use ceramic brakes and aren't those insanely expensive to replace? Though perhaps the Turbo has it to.

I bet the resale of a gt3 should be far and away the better of the 3? Would it be considered more if a collectors item perhaps?

I love all the suede materials inside as well. To be honest the big thing that bothers me about it is since its 2wd it doesn't seem to hAve those huge hot hips of the turbo (unless I'm mistaken).

Absolutely rubbish. That is a very old myth. The N/A high-revving engines in Porsche are extremely reliable. I would say, more so that the turbo simply because they have been developed and tested in endurance racing where reliability is key.

Yeah, I have heard of the pulley issues with some early GT3 (more present in 996), but I read at 6speedonline.com that Porsche had covered the faulty parts and installation under warranty so all of the used GT3 should have that pulley and RMS issues resolved.

This thread is exactly about GT3 reliability and you can see many GT3 owners chiming in. You can read this thread and get a pretty good idea

One of the most famous Porsche 911 tuner Sharkwerks also chimes in and you can see his response:

hey chris, honestly I can't think of a better car to drive to the track, on the track and then home again. These cars make me smile every time I drive, whether it's our RS or one of JWGT2's fruit loops

Don't worry about a few drops of oil. That's essentially all that is going on when the RMS leaks. We know why and its because Porsche decided to use the newer teflon style one that has given them issues on 997S' (darned summer student program

). You can wait until your dealer replaces it for you or just use the 996/997TT version (with the spring) which we know from experience doesn't leak. Tire wear can be anywhere from 2000 miles (mentioning no names SnowBoarder!) to 10,000 depending upon how its driven. The gearbox is strong as hell as is the clutch. You can throw in a LWF if/when you have the dealer do the RMS under warranty. We don't know that the cause of the pulley failure is the LWF but if need be and if it makes your dealer feel better then use the RS pulley, bolt and washer.

You are right about the GT3 resale. They have been holding their value extremely well. More so than any other 911 model.

After a few days of thinking, I'd likely change my choice: 991 rather than 997. That all said, whichever you choose, I'm sure you'd be happy. They are both Porsche 911's, that's all that matters. Engineering perfection.

If I were to get a 911 as an everyday car, then 991 or 991S would be my ticket. If I were getting it for a weekend toy, GT3 would then be chariot of choice.

Seems like Porsche is really converting a lot of people nowadays, with the new 911 especially. So many previous M-B and BMW stalwarts are starting to say how they want a Porsche next.... including me! :D

Maybe we just earn more money now and Porsche is just the next step :)

Well, deal fell through with the potential transferee. I knew it would because I was lagging on getting him the paperwork as it was just sitting in my house waiting to be signed.... as an obvious sign that my subconscious wasn't ready to do this, yet.

It's kind of a bummer, but at the same time, I really don't know what to get, and until I get my stocks back up to their peak highs for the year, I'm forcing myself to not feel so frivolous.

.... I did get to thinking, though.... the only way to get out of my car without paying a penalty, is to get another M-B (with their incentives, especially come Holidays, they will eat up your Lease payments and significantly discount a new or probably CPO car. Problem is, I don't like any new M-B's, aside from the SL, and of course that thing is way out of my budget at the moment.

.... And, of course I still do love the W212's styling, my favorite M-B on the market. If it weren't for the fact that they're all over the place (seeing them everywhere wears on me) then I wouldn't feel so compelled to get out of it. Also, I'm tired of the incredibly inefficient 268 HP V6. If I want inefficient, at least back it with some V8 muscle and sound.

Therefore, how about a 2010-2011 W212 E63? I get the bodystyle I love, resale is terrible (as with any AMG or M product), and I get the last of the remarkable N/A 6.2L V8 masterpiece. Safety, conservatism, a dash of flamboyance, room, size, and race-car ethics all in one. Only problem is, it would be my 3rd W212 and even though I still love the body as much as I did when I first got it.... that just seems a bit "boring".
