Which would you rather? '07-ish 911 Turbo or New 991 Carrera (saying same price)?

Which would you rather BUY in "real life", if you were spending around 80K?

This would be between a Used 2007-ish 911 Turbo with around 15-40K miles, or New/Lightly Used 2012-2013 BASE Carrera with very little options, pretending that the selling price would be roughly $80K (you can get the Turbo I exampled even cheaper actually, so it would save you some money).

Any true car enthusiast knows the pro's and cons of either. The 911 Turbo speaks for itself, and the 991 BASE is as "bare bones" as a 911 will get, but still will feature probably more creature comforts than an '07 Turbo, will be a newer body of course which means you're not spending all that money on an already replaced body (though 911 Turbo's are instant Classics and I think most will agree look better and feel more special as they age), have a Warranty, be of newer engineering so much safer I'm sure, much more comfortable and isolated, a little larger, etc.

Which would you choose in REAL LIFE (not as an enthusiast, I mean if you really needed to buy one meaning rationalization would have to play a part).

Reason I ask this is because I was at a Porsche Dealership the other day, and saw a new 997 Turbo behind a Base 991. I was shocked to see how much cooler and beefier the 997 TURBO looked behind it, since IMO the 991 is a great evolution that I have seen to build upon all the great things about the 997 and add to them. It got me thinking "which would I hypothetically want"?

Since a kid I always hated Carrera's when seeing them next to Turbo's. I guess I still feel the same way (though I love clean Carrera's for their own merits). All the scoops and bulges really do it for me.

I would stretch myself just a little and get a new 911 with some essential options, things that you think it should have. The older car is much faster, but I think you would kick yourself when a new 991 pulls up beside you. The 991's interior alone is enough reason to buy the newer car. Of find a 2012 991 demo car. I vote 991.

Design wise - 997
Engine wise - 997

The 997 has the ultimate interior... so BARE yet amazingly beautiful as a sports car should be! The new one looks cheap to me and is not as exotic and special as the last one.

The exterior... hmmm: The 997 has a short wheel base and that's what makes it stunning and a true 911 IMO.
Overal the 997 design is less generic and more emotional... a car with a real soul, a racer.
Even tho I like the 991 it's just not making my heart beat much. I rather buy the new Boxster S if it should be a new Porsche :)

WOW, the 991 Turbo is just gonna be something.

Yeah, this is a toughy, in terms of "which would I want", hypothetically, of course ( :D).

Really though, when I saw the 997 Turbo behind the 991 Carrera, the Turbo just slaughtered it, this is coming from the biggest 991 fan. BUT, in fairness, the 991 was a putrid brown color and the 997 Turbo makes the regular 997 Carrera look like a piece of bland paper.

Porsche Turbo's FTW, the fact that the 991 can even stand up to it is something.

Mini_Coop: I know what you mean. The 997 is really a "true 911" in that purist sense. Just look at the way the rear slopes down, a true rear engine car.... the 991 streamlined the look more by making it still appear relatively rear engined, but it's almost mid-engined now. Also, the short wheelbase and more upright roof and lower front of the 997 are pure Classic 911, very unique, while the 991 maintains that, yet mixes it with a direction of modern sportscar proportions. I absolutely love the 991 though, IMO it carries the soul of a 991 perfectly, but the soul of a 997 might be the best of both worlds when it comes to old world VS new world, since it's part of the post-996 modern era, but it was a conscious effort after the 996's "misses" to make it rekindle the spirit of the 993.

Interior wise, IMO the 991 is awesome, more homogenous than the 997 though, more acceptable, "mainstream", and very well done IMO. However, I'm one of the rare people who also think the 997's interior looks capable of being a brand new design as well, a perfect sports car interior, pure, minimal, high quality and classy, and VERY timeless.

The funny thing is, most layman's won't even notice a difference between the two, lol. I've even seen two together in the same color, and they seriously confused me. That's a great thing, I love the careful 911 evolutions.

The center console in the new one is tad too much for a true 911 IMO...
Until the 991 GT3 arrives... no 911 for me :)

991 is fantastic but a Turbo, is a Turbo. Even if it is a slightly older vehicles its not exactly if you are trading down by any means. I'd have to have the Turbo because I'd be kicking myself for not getting the extra oomph. Enthusiast or not.

It really depends on ur taste KA

I honestly love them both, and I had the same problem choosing one, bettween the 997.2 pdk and the 991. I can't say the 991 is better in terms of looks and honestly the 997 IMHO looks just as good or maybe better as a true 911, but practicality, the NA engine, the gear box, confort, and the drive is what made me lean towards the 991.

For sure the 997 turbo is extremely fast, but if u take them to a track the 991 will impress more, the 997 is ass happy and u will experience lots of turbo lag.

+ u can never get the sound of a high revving flat 6 in a turbo :D.

Good luck

Guys don't mention the next 991 turbo plzzzz. Lol I don't want to trade my car

I'd go for a base 991 Carrera S with no options (only good looking wheels)

Nah, NA > Turbo, and the Carrera S is plenty fast, particularly with the Power Kit. 430 hp and 0-100 in 4.0/3.9 secs
Not to mention the Carrera S is RWD and much lighter and high tech...

Definitely agreed. BTW, this is comparing VS a BASE 991, NOT an "S", just a "regular" Carrera. No way in hell is anyone finding a 991 Carrera S anywhere near $80K!

Yeah, the 997 is more "purist 911" looking, but seriously, I think the 991 is the best evolution of the best car line of all time, it simply perfects the formula, IMO. The 997 still has its merits in Turbo form, however, and IMO with all the scoops and extra aggression does come off as more pronounced.... yet the 991 I think is still the superior design. So massaged and refined. I would take a 996 Turbo over a 997 Carrera, for example, so considering I still would rather have a 991 Carrera BASE (not even S) over a 997 Turbo were they both going for the same price, says a ton.

Really, I want a 991 so damn bad. However, it's just too far out of my budget, and IMO as much as I'd happily pay for it, it's just too high priced for me (though I will keep working and crunching numbers until I find my way into one, perhaps, at least one of these days, lol). The 997 Turbo you can find with low mileage for low $70's, which puts it about $10+K cheaper than the cheapest very "basic" 991 Carrera's on the market. It makes the 997TT a HUGE value, comparatively. Still, if I were looking at the two, it would still be a tough one.

NA>>>>>>>Turbo... that's for sure!
But are you really gonna pay 15k euro extra for 30PS more?
PS: 911 Turbo is a good turbo car as Porsche knows how to do it and I always trust them :)

Well if absolutely ridiculously expensive, for sure. I'd be happy with a base 911 S, which is already way overpriced and out of my budget ;)

But it's just a fantastic car and I'd rather have one over a 997.1 Turbo, for sure!

I do know that if I was gonna go ripping around in one for an afternoon, I'd go with the 997TT, no question. To live with, is another story.

Having a 997TT sounds like it would be like owning my own personal amusement park, however one that I cannot ever safely and efficiently utilize the extent of.

So a 991 Carrera sounds perfect. With 20" rims brotha

PS, the exhaust looks even better than a Carrera S:

I agree about the tips too, I like them better!

LOL @ Mini. :D In reality, it's a win win either way.
