M5 Which would YOU buy? M5 or loaded 640i GC (same price)

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports saloon category. The first M5 model was hand-built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1984, with occasional gaps in production (1995 to 1998, 2023 to 2024). Official website: BMW M

6er gc in real life looks nothing short of amazing, one was parked just outside of bmw dealer in my town, almost every people that was passing by stopped to stare at it. Last car that amazed me like that in real life was audi r8

Without a doubt. M5. Every. Single. Time.

Without a shadow of a doubt.

It's not even the 650i GC, but the 640i GC. Makes the choice even more ludicrous.

It would be just as easy. 650i or 640i vs M5? Hah!

Time to reveal. I hate 6GC. don't ask me why, it doesn't look half good in real life.

Not hate, but I think there's awkward stuff going on. The side still reminds me of a Peugeot 607
Too bad, that K-A made this thread solely to bitch about the 6 GC. Just in disguise ;)
But it's ok, it's ok.

If I can afford a M5, then I wouldn't even bother thinking about the 640i GC. Sure, you could say the Gran Coupé is more of a head turner, but you can't argue with the M5's 560 bhp. You can't...

Actually, that's false. The fact that I'm one of the only ones here who admits to even flirting with hypothetically "choosing" a 640 GC over an M5 should convey that.

To the posts above asking if I've seen it. I haven't, which is why I'm still cautious to say I'd indefinitely choose an M5, in the case that the GC blows it out of the water in looks so much that 560 HP is a moot point (in reality, it is, and even 320 or whatever HP would be exhilarating enough, not to mention actually realistically usable, however technically overpriced in this situation is inevitable). In pics, something just ain't right, but I need to feel the presence of the car and see it on the roads and that can all change.

6er CG is such a beauty. Massive road presence in real life. But to answer the question, no a M is always more special.

...

I told my wife that the M5 was better value and she said: Why? They're the same price and the 6GC looks much better? I said the M5 is way faster and she said: How fast do you need to go? I didn't bother continuing that conversation...

LOL

Like it's been said a number of times that: don't argue with your wife cause you are unlikely to win the argument.

My next car most likely is going to be 6GC x-drive, I don't think any more MGC. I need one car to replace M5 and X6M but is going to be a big loss to sell my M5. Any how this is project for end of next year. Everything can change. I vote for 6GC and watch out boys 560 hp is very dangerous power. Don't let you overestimate your abilities a spatially on open road.

I have yet to see a GC so I couldn't tell you which way I'd definitely go. If I lived by the Countryside, the M5 would be the obvious choice, but this indeed highlights how frivolously you're spending your money when you get an INSANELY OVERPRICED 6 GC.
But hadn't you already concluded that the 6 GC was overpriced for you even before making the poll? I'm pretty sure you had, and multiple times. Hard to believe you would seriously entertain any car that you personally find awkward, even in pictures. If you have reservations about the way a car looks, it would be hard to understand how you could drop $90k on it. Unless you were stinkin' filthy rich in which case comparing cars based on value for money becomes rather less important.
That the M5 might offer exceptional value for money (assuming you really need the extra space and really do realize its performance difference on anthing resembling a normal basis on public roads) does not mean that the 6GC is insanely overpriced.

No matter the 6GC you compare the M5 with the mighty M will always remain the logical choice IMO because it combines everything one requires from their performance BMW at a reasonable price.

Logical? Rubbish. There's nothing logical about it. It's purely a subjective choice based on the material whims of the human psyche. You can't bandy about logic in the context of this entirely fanciful discussion.

I can think of dozens of my friends and associates for whom the performance bent of the M5 would be a serious detractor in the attractiveness of the offering. Take T and Z for example - one sits on the board of a multi-national and the other owns her own PR company. Neither would ever see the logic in buying the M5 over the sexier, classier, more elegant (see: all subjective) and (now the objective) more fuel efficient, less taxable, more exclusive, more comfortable 6er GC.

Like I said earlier, if you want to be as logical as possible about buying a car then you need to view them purely as appliances. And then buy a Golf.

Great point! And for that I cannot turn around my vote. I voted for the M5, mainly out of respect for an Icon AND driving an X6M, knowing the engineering marvel of M by ownership. YET now, today my money will buy a 6GC for it's THE most beautiful car in this, my eyes that BMW has ever produced with THE best/finest cabin ever!;)

If it was between M6 GC and M5 i'd think about it, but in this case, for the same money, it's an M without thinking twice.

Though I don't need, and at the moment neither can buy such cars - luxury cars with four doors - what would be important for me, would be that the sedan had frameless windows and 4 seats, not 5 seats. In this case the cars that come into mind are the 6 Series GranCoupé and CLS. If I'd prefere an M or AMG version, it would rather be for the badge itself than the better performance. In my "dreamer" case, I'd pick the M5 Sedan over any 6 Series GranCoupé, only for badge reason, but also because the M6 GranCoupé is not mentioned in this poll as it is not yet out.

@DblPen : Nobody of us can really advise you. It is not like you are chosing between M5 vs. E AMG or 6GC vs. CLS, but more like me chosing between BRZ "STI" vs. M135i vs. Cayman.

A little off topic but worth mentioning.

I decided to check out the local listings for 6-Series' (of course only Coupes are showing up Used so far) since the last time I did was a few months ago when they were still too new to show how depreciation would factor.

Let me say that I have NEVER seen such WILDLY rapid depreciation. I'm not talking just 640i's, or even 640 Verts. I'm talking not only 650i's well equipped but I'm talking 650 Verts well equipped. I'm talking cars that were in the upper $90's to $100K just months ago when they were brand new, still in their FIRST model year cycle, selling already for high $60's to low $70's, with either single digit mileage (under 10K) or in the teens. These cars with just a few miles are listed next to Dealer advertisements for the same cars, same model years, just brand new, and about $20-$30K more (MSRP).

My intent for this Thread wasn't even to highlight the gross overpricing of the 6-Series line, but I was actually shocked. This must be some new record.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
