If i were you i would go for the A3!
318 compact: From the first look i would say no! It is not only more expensive to maintain than the A3, but the worst of its problems is its look. Even though i am a BMW fan, i say it doesn't look good at all!
A3. I think it is the best all-arounder. I think it suits you the most. You gotta remember that the best car to buy is not always what is the best in the market, but what suits you the best. The fact that it is not as driving fan as the 3er is not so big problem, since the A3 has a very good HP, and costs way less, as it seems that money matters.
318Ci: Even though it is replaced, it is still very very driving fan and a very beautiful coupe! It would make a good car, and with a nice image at least here. I don't know what's the problem with bimmers in Britain though.
Anyway, the way you put it, i think that the Audi suits you the most. After all, it's a car that noone can blame easily, it is good looking, and you won't find anyone that will say that you did wrong when you bought it, and this is a good thing. Feeling great after buying it is definitely something that it you don't buy easily.
Go for it, and post us your reviews. I have driven one, though it was the 1.6. It felt great though, very well-built, solid and good looking. It is parked just two cars away from mine, at my house's garage, and after a year, i am still not bored of watching it everyday!
So what colour are you think it's the best? I would go for a dark grey one!
