Regardless, the Scirocco Study R forecasts what we can expect to see when it replaces the Golf R32 towards the end of 2009 as the rumored R20T. The Study R is powered by the same 2.0-liter TFSI engine found in the current Audi S3 but produces 5hp more for a total of 270hp (198kW). Transmission is a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox and other goodies include adjustable coilover suspension, four-piston brake calipers and sound-optimized exhaust system.

torque steer in the VAG's capable of 360hp ie gti ed30 and leon cupra have minimal torque steer unlike vxr etc. Trouble is though getting 360hp down on the tarmac in the wet. A 360hp leon will spin its wheels in fourth gear i the wet.

Here's the issue. VWoA will try to say there's a limited market as it is for this car and they'll price the car so high as to put it out or reach of many prospective buyers. They'll sit on lots for months on end until dealers finally start discounting them and by the end of the year VWoA will pull the plug. That was the story for the U.S. spec MKV R32. Upmarket and powerful hot hatches that lean on the pricey side are either something VWoA has yet to master marketing, or the U.S. consumer just really isn't willing to pay the price. Either way I WANT this car. Things may be different now that people are down sizing into smaller and more fuel efficient cars. Plus this car will be FWD which may bring the price down compared to the AWD R32. I just really hope this ISN'T a limited edition model that will run for a year then cease afterward just like the MKV R32. If it does, then no deal (I have my reasons).

^^^ Have you seen the amazing prices for a slightly used 08' R32? They're down to 23K in my area, a great price. Makes me want one. Yeah at 33K they are pricey new, but with a few miles they become very tempting.

Haha. Yeh, that's more reason for VWoA not to import the Scirocco here, but like I said on the flip side the market has changed drastically. So cars like this could work. I'm thinking that the fact the Scirocco we'll be getting will most likely retain front-wheel-drive will help keep the price down to a relatively sane and accessible level.

The thinly disguised Scirocco "Studie R" that you see here, is in fact basically the European Scirocco R model. Expected to arrive in Europe during 2009, the Scirocco R model will be built at the factory in Portugal which is *not* equipped to produce all-wheel-drive models. This means that the 270hp 2.0T will be putting power down through front wheels only, albeit with a new limited slip system. That's the bad news.

Good news is that those that have driven the car say that the system puts power down fairly effectively and the car is high on the fun-to-drive meter. Think of the best traits of the GTI and make it wider and lower and you have a fair idea of what the car is like.

So the burning question: will it come to America? Well... At the Paris Auto Show I had a chance to sit down with VWoA's current ruling leader, Stefan Jacoby and had a good time talking about VW's future plans. He asked me what I thought of a high trim-level Scirocco, perhaps in "R" sport trim, 265hp, sport seats, big brakes, etc., etc. My first question was if all-wheel-drive is part of the equation (it isn't) and the second was price. Since the Scirocco is really just a sportier GTI, there is the very real possibility that it could cannibalize GTI sales. VW would likely position the Scirocco at a starting price north of $30k to distance it from the GTI which puts it on shaky ground. Selling the Scirocco at a price point potentially $10,000 more expensive than a MazdaSpeed 3 is a very tough proposition. I'd like to see cool stuff like the Scirocco as much as anyone else, but I also want a car like this to be *successful* so we see more of them in the future. While the die-hard faithful will buy a few of them, I fear that we'll have the Golf VI R32 all over again where the remaining surplus of cars languishes on dealer lots and need big incentives to move them.

At this point a final decision hasn't been reached and almost anything could happen given the state of the car industry and the economy in general. We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear something, but feel free to chime in with your opinion in our forums.

270 will be fine and fun. These cars below all have over 300hp through the front wheels and the scirocco chassis will be better abd have a better lsd!
