Jetta VW Jetta first time owner, forgot to change oil, maintenance/engine life questions!

Autobahn Newbie
I purchased a 2017 VW Jetta S 1.4 Tsi Automatic. I am new to car maintenance and so like a fool I dont think the oil got changed for the first 26k miles. I use full synthetic good quality I believe Castrol oil but if not just a regular name brand that I would add too to make the levels full (dont have bottle on me). I never noticed the dipstick looking particularly gross or gunky. I also on a road trip had my coolant get low due to my cap coming off under my hood causing spilling which caused the overheating light to come on briefly on the way home (hot area, and was messing around with the throttle probably a bit too much). I only had about 20 miles to go at that point so I finished the trip and added coolant and never had any issues like such again. Ive put 7000 more miles on since and am going to do an oil change now, on time lol. Yesterday for the first time ever when probably again hitting the throttle a bit too hard pulling out I heard a bit of a clunk/knock for the first time that wasn’t anything super loud especially not compared to an old car but it did make me nervous as my car is only going on 4 years old.

My question is, did i mess things up for down the line 4-6 years from now? Would it be something to the extent of my engine will last 150k instead of 250k miles now? Is there anything I can look out for, check, keep an eye on etc. in particular?

I read about like engine flushes or carbon flushes…would any of these help? Any oils I should use etc?Any tips, knowledge appreciated. Thanks!!!

Don't forget the oil filters too.

To be honest, in my limited experience (I'm not a mechanic), so long as there was oil in it, even just very used oil, it's probably not done as much damage as running it without coolant will - you really need to watch out for that! No doubt having worn out oil might have put the engine a bit further a long its wear curve.

... but personally, if it were me, I'd just change the fluids sooner for the next couple of intervals, and make sure you use the recommended oil, or better...

... but like I say, I'm not a mechanic.

Anything that would go clunk in the engine due to low oil would likely be somewhat more immediately noticeable, and smokey.

Hello MaxMax16,

Not sure where you are from?

I would suggest going to the Dealer or Service Centre you trust to see what the knocking noise is/was?

Make sure the fluids (oil/coolants etc) you use are correct for the vehicle - you can find the information in your service manual.
