The all-new 2015 Volvo XC90 SUV marks the first car from the new in-house developed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which will form the base for a range of upcoming new Volvo models. The new platform as well as the expansion of the Torslanda plant are part of Volvo’s ongoing USD 11 billion investment program in new products and production capacity.

Volvo Cars global retail deliveries were up by 9.2 per cent during the first nine months of the year while the outlook for the full year is a total sales volume of approximately 470,000 cars representing a 10 per cent growth and an all-time high sales result for the company. The all-new Volvo XC90 SUV is expected to further grow the company’s sales volumes during 2015, creating a need for increased output from the Torslanda plant where the new car is to be produced. Deliveries from the Torslanda plant are expected to reach another all-time high in 2015.

In addition to introducing a third shift, the Torslanda plant will also implement a revised working agreement to further support higher production volumes. The new agreement increases the flexibility in production to meet customer demand.

The new working agreement will also be introduced in the first quarter of 2015 and when fully implemented, the Torslanda plant will employ 4,600 people. The plant, which earlier this year celebrated 50 years of car making, currently produces the Volvo S60, S80, V60, V70, XC70 and XC90 models.

Volvo commences Australian testing for kangaroo detection technology
334510ff866e142109c04829b47b6d3b.webp

Volvo Cars is working on a kangaroo detection technology tailored to their AU-spec cars.

You might be tempted to believe this is a joke, but in reality one of the most costly causes of traffic collisions in Australia has to do with crashes involving kangaroos, so Volvo Cars is working on a new system to lower the risks of an impact with the animal. A team of safety experts has travelled to the Australian Capital Territory to film and study the roadside behavior of kangaroos in their natural habitat. The research work is conducted at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra, Canberra which is considered as being a top location for kangaroo collisions.

The data obtained will serve as foundation for an industry-first kangaroo detection and collision avoidance system which will help lower the number of road incidents with kangaroos by using a radar and camera technology to detect the animals and automatically apply the brakes in case of an imminent collision.

Based on the information gathered by the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA), there are more than 20,000 accidents with kangaroos on the roads of Australia each year and this generates more than 75 million AUD in insurance claims.

Volvo Cars reports December and 2025 sales

Volvo Cars reported global sales of 75,049 cars in December, up 2 per cent compared to the same period last year. For the full year 2025, Volvo Cars’ global sales stood at 710,042 cars, down by 7 per cent. China, followed by the US, UK, Germany and Sweden were the five largest markets in 2025.
“We are pleased to end the year on a positive note with growth across key regions thanks to increased sales of our fully electric and plug-in hybrid offerings,” said Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer. “Despite a challenging market that continues to be under pressure on multiple fronts, we are encouraged to see increased deliveries of our fully electric products, notably the EX90 and EX30. Furthermore, growing sales of the new XC70 long range plug-in hybrid underscores the car's strength in the rapidly growing electrified segment in China. Overall, 2025 was a challenging year for Volvo Cars and the broader industry alike, but we have taken necessary measures to increase our share in the fast-growing BEV and PHEV segments, including the introduction of the game-changing EX60, to be revealed on January 21.”
In Europe, sales reached 33,406 cars in December, marginally declined compared to the same period last year. However, sales of fully electric cars increased by 33 per cent compared to the same period last year, while overall sales of electrified models increased by 2 per cent. The electrified models accounted for 65 per cent of all cars sold in Europe during the month. For the full year 2025, overall sales dropped by 10 per cent to 332,667 cars.

Sales in the US increased by 1 per cent in December, totalling 14,193 cars. Sales of electrified models decreased by 48 per cent compared to the same period last year, mostly due to the adverse impact from the removal of subsidies on fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars. In 2025, overall sales stood at 121,607 cars, a decline of 3 per cent compared to the previous year.

Volvo Cars' sales in China reached 16,103 cars, up 1 per cent compared to December 2024. Sales of electrified models stood at 5,690 cars, an increase of 128 per cent while sales of plug-in hybrids grew 213 per cent. In 2025, Volvo Cars’ total sales in China stood at 149,549 cars, down by 4 per cent.

In 2025, the XC60 was the top-selling model with sales of 230,655 cars (2024: 230,853), followed by the XC40/EX40, with total sales of 166,920 cars (2024: 173,890) and the XC90 at 103,217 cars (2024: 108,621).

XC60,XC90 and XC-EX40 are still rock solid.

The EX30 is too spartan for a Volvo IMHO.

the EX30 needs a new interior, you can easily see where all the cost cutting was done. sad since the sister cars from Zeekr and Smart have much better interiors for the same or a little bit less cost.

I sat in the #1 and the EX30 and thought WTF, there’s also no matrix LED and HUD in the Volvo, and the rear seats are really cramped compared to the smart.
