Just a note on the seats... The fronts are okay. But the rears are actually quite uncomfortable considering they are not very adjustable... For a small Asian frame like myself I had backaches more than several times sitting in the car! I guess the seats were designed with an European frame in mind.

Your car was a 5-seater version? Would be interesting to know, if the electrical rear seats would have improved the seat comfort.

Yes, ours was the five seater... The rear bench is not adjustable at all except for lumbar.

How cheap can you pick up a Used Phaeton for?

As ugly, and prematurely dated as it looks, it'd be a helluva all around car for how cheap I'm assuming it is (based on demand/perception, etc.).

Impressive press package. It's almost if VW are seriously pushing this car to gain more market share. As a second hand car it's an unbeatable poor man's A8. Brand new, it's probably not worth the money unless it's a heavily discounted fleet car. I can only image few private customers buying it on finance. It's too utilitarian.

It seems like all the new assistance systems are following MB really closely! Stuff like road signs assist and blind spot assist...

Hi Guys,

I like this facelift not as much as the original face though.

Obviously its been made for the Chinese market where it sells very well for VW.
I think its interesting to see how little actually has been changed from the original.

I love the new look, especially from the A pillars forward, it's probably the most handsome out of it, the A8, 7er and S-class, but from A pillars back it has no finesse, just appear bulky and very heavy.

Great car to own but best let someone else take the first hit.

Really one of the most underestimated automobiles.

But that has residuals plummeting and used Phaetons can be had for relatively little money here in Germany. Of course, running and maintanence costs on the petrol V8s' and W12s' are hefty, but the V6 diesels are quite economical. The assembly quality of these cars is simply amazing, inside and out. The interior is nothing short of gorgeous. How one stands with regard to the cars' exterior design-well, that is quite subjective.

I think there will be because of the fact that there will be a next gen Continental witch uses the same platform as the Phaeton. The question is when ?

How much are Phaetons brand new?

Damn, they are CHEAP on the Used Car market, would be a lot of bang for the buck!! Are they known to be uber expensive to fix/repair/maintain? Or standard VW fare? Also, are they technically considered to be VW's S-Class competitor?

VW is indeed in the process of developing a Phaeton successor. Recent reports do however indicate that it will be quite a different sort of automobile in comparison. It appears to be based on the Audi-developed MLP matrix and the cars' overall length will be somewhat shorter than the current model while its' wheelbase and height will increase. It is also speculated that the classic notchback sedan theme will be jettisoned in favor of a fastback/hatchback theme, more similar to that of the BMW 5 series GT than the Audi A7. VWs' Concept D1 of 1999, the Phaetons' precursor and a darling of Dr. Ferdinand Piech, is said to be an inspiration for the upcoming Phaeton successor. We should see this car in production guise in 2013 or 2014.

The recently facelifted Bentley Continental is indeed merely a facelift although most body panels have been modified. The next genuinely new Continental/Flying Spur will be based on the new VW-Group MSB matrix under development by Porsche. An evolution of the current Panameras' underpinnings, thus RWD and AWD in configuration. But this will be a few years down the road.

Volkswagen has discontinued the slow-selling Phaeton full-size sedan from the UK market.

Many will be surprised to hear that Volkswagen was still selling the Phaeton in United Kingdom, a model which came out back in 2002 and received a couple of facelifts in 2007 and 2010. It's no longer available as the outdated model had an engine lineup which didn't meet the upcoming Euro 6 emissions regulations.

Volkswagen invested no less than $1 billion in developing the Phaeton but they never really managed to achieve the annual sales target of 20,000 units. At the beginning of the year Bernstein analyst Max Warburton said VW lost €28,000 for each car sold in the 2002 - 2012 interval.

The Phaeton doesn't really make sense in Volkswagen's lineup but the model is still available in some markets and it's even getting a second generation before the end of the decade. We've been hearing some interesting rumors about the successor, like that it's going to be more comfortable than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class and that it will come with semi-autonomous driving technology.

It could be even bigger than the current model but should shave off some serious weight by adopting an all-aluminum body. Volkswagen development chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser previously said the new Phaeton is going to be a "class leading" vehicle as well as "very smooth and luxurious" while a German report from January 2015 stated Volkswagen wants to make it the most comfortable car in its segment.

The second generation Volkswagen Phaeton will likely be unveiled in the second half 2017 for Europe and Asia, but U.S. customers will have to wait until 2018 or 2019.

This was overdue. The most luxurious car VW have ever made is the Passat CC. Amongst Mercs and Audis it looks the business. If VW increase its wheel-base, improve interior materials then they would have a perfect Phaeton successor that people will want to buy.
