Volkswagen Cross Coupe GTE concept unveiled

Production model will go into production by the end of 2016
Volkswagen has unveiled the Cross Coupe GTE concept, ahead of its debut at the North American International Auto Show.

Designed to preview an upcoming crossover for North America, the Cross Coupe GTE has an aggressive front fascia with an aluminum grille and LED headlights. The concept also has muscular fenders, gloss black accents and strong character lines. We can also see a sloping roofline, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and 22-inch aluminum wheels.

The five-seat interior is a little plain but comes nicely equipped with semi-aniline Nappa leather seats, gloss black trim and aluminum accents. There's a digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen climate control system and an infotainment system with a 10.1-inch display.

Power is provided by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a 3.6-liter V6 engine, two electric motors and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup enables the concept to produce a combined maximum output of 355 bhp (264 kW) and 280 lb-ft (379 Nm) of torque. In terms of performance, the all-wheel drive model can accelerates from 0-60 mph in six seconds, return 70 MPGe and travel up to 20 miles (32 km) on electricity alone.

While the Cross Coupe GTE is only a concept, Volkswagen confirmed the production model will have seven seats and be built at their Chattanooga, Tennessee plant by the end of 2016.

Oh, geez ... yet another iteration of VW Cross Coupe Concept!!!

What happened with the ones from 2011 (CrossCoupe Concept) & 2013 (CrossBlue Coupe Concept)? Not to mention also VAG's Audi CrossCoupe Quattro Concept from 2007.

Holy mother of the holy father, what on earth were they thinking when designing this cars rear end and middle of the door positioned door handles, not too mention the ugly wheel arch bumps? Those things spoil the overall look of what could possibly be a nice looking car. Ok I do think the front looks good and the interior is nice.

Here's the thing...

I like everything about it. Love that frontal DRG and I hope that VW pursues that design language somewhere down the line. A nice concept study that successfully melds existing and new design elements. There's certainly familiarity in some of the design features but I don't view the complete result as pastiche. I also appreciate the measured amount of class-appropriate ruggedness of the otherwise stylish and modern interior.

Looks like an Audi with VW front. And the door handles are too low. Interior is nice, again Audi like.

Is it me or both Audi and VW are showing the same concept over and over again, each time with new promises of it reaching production? I just don't get it. We've seen way too much of Audi Quattro and VW Cross Blue concepts, yet without a production version...
