Volkswagen previews new SUV styling with Cross Coupe concept

By: Greg Kable

Volkswagen unexpectedly previewed the bold new look of its second-generation Tiguan at the Tokyo motor show with the unveiling of a four-wheel-drive, hybrid-powered concept car called the Cross Coupe.

Sitting on the German carmaker's versatile new MQB platform, the four-seater is officially described as a cross between a four-door car and a compact SUV. Some people speculate that Volkswagen is considering a second compact off-roader model in the mold of the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque.

However, Volkswagen sources close to design boss Walter de'Silva confirm that the Cross Coupe previews a new design lineage that will be adopted by all of VW's upcoming SUV models, including the next Tiguan due out toward the end of 2014. The new Tiguan is expected to come with the choice of two wheelbase lengths, the longer of which will provide space for a third row of seats and likely will be assembled at the company's new plant in Chattanooga, Tenn.

"We won't rule out the possibility of adding a sportier SUV to the Volkswagen lineup at some time. But the main message with the Cross Coupe is its styling, which stands for the future of SUV design at Volkswagen," Autoweek was told.

The Cross Coupe uses front-end styling elements first seen on the Giugiaro-penned Tex and Go concepts wheeled out at the Geneva motor show earlier this year. Those are combined with heavily sculptured surfaces throughout, a highly defined shoulder--or tornado line, as de'Silva refers to it--a higher waistline, shallow side glass, a heavily angled tailgate, distinctive wheel-arch design and 20-inch alloy wheels. The five-door Cross Coupe is considerably bolder than that of the existing Tiguan, whose design dates to 2005 and a former VW design team headed by Murat Günak.

Inside, VW gave the concept a classy Audi-esque cabin with a sweeping dashboard, a high-tech instrument display and grab handles incorporated into the center pod. The four heavily contoured seats are separated by a high-set center tunnel used to store the hybrid powertrain's battery.

At 171.0 inches long, 73.5 inches wide and 60.0 inches tall, the Cross Coupe is 4.9 inches shorter, 2.3 inches wider and a significant 7.0 inches lower than today's Tiguan. It also rides on a wheelbase that is one inch longer, at 103.5 inches.

Powering the Cross Coupe is a gasoline-electric hybrid system capable of providing drive to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It combines Volkswagen's familiar turbocharged 1.4-liter, four-cylinder direct-injection engine producing 148 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque with a pair of brushless electric motors--one mounted up front delivering 54 hp and 133 lb-ft, and a larger one at the rear with 114 hp and 199 lb-ft. The system is calibrated to provide a maximum 261 hp.

Energy for the electric motors is supplied by a battery mounted low in the center tunnel. Rated at 9.8 kilowatt-hours and operating at a maximum 370 volts, the lithium-ion unit can be charged both through the recovery of kinetic energy (both on a trailing throttle and under braking) and via plug-in to an external power outlet. Volkswagen claims an all-electric range of 25 miles at typical city speeds in front-wheel-drive mode, during which a clutch disconnects the engine from the drive process when there is sufficient battery charge.

In a move aimed at reducing weight, VW removed the conventional mechanical drive shaft. The rear wheels are driven exclusively by the rear electric motor. In four-wheel-drive mode, the rear electric motor is fed energy from the front electric motor, which then acts as a generator powered by the gasoline engine. VW says the concept SUV weighs 3,854 pounds, 282 pounds more than the heaviest of today's Tiguan models. The weight is distributed 58 percent on the front axle and 42 percent on the rear.

Despite its weight, Volkswagen claims a 0-to-62-mph time of 7.0 seconds, making the Cross Coupe 0.8 second faster than the most powerful Tiguan model today, the 2.0 TSI, in straight-line performance. Top speed, however, is capped at 124 mph on a combination of gasoline and electric power, or 71 mph when relying on electric power alone.

But it is fuel economy and overall lack of emissions that Wolfsburg officials are talking up with their latest concept car, which is said to get combined-cycle consumption of 87.1 mpg on the European test cycle.

Now that is a cute little thing!! Like a mix of Q5/Q3 and the new passat.
Like it a lot!

Just noticed the Cross Coupé is even lower than the new B-Class, and shorter. ;)

I have inspected the dimensions a bit closely the the car is neck and neck with the Evoque in dimensions. And anyone who has seen the Evoque in real life knows how small it is. It's like a glorified hatchback.

And anyone who has seen the Evoque in real life knows how small it is. It's like a glorified hatchback.

That's exactly what it is. :) And my, what excellent glory it too is! That's what's gotten all these other car companies' marketing departments bleating to bring their competitors into the fray. One of the best crossovers we've seen in years and now VW, Audi, BMW-MINI and Merc will be rushing to get in on the action.

It's the most perfect "Urban SUV"!

It would be my choise, too.

Further close inspection may have revealed a potential iPrius match? ;)

That interior is essentially production ready. We could see this sooner than we think.

To me, the front is all VW, the rear is all Audi and the sides look like that Volvo concept on the first page.

VW plans big expansion of crossover range

BOLOGNA, Italy – Volkswagen AG will expand its crossover range by adding models of different sizes -- including a model below the Tiguan -- and with different design characteristics to appeal to a wider audience.

"Crossovers demand is expanding from mature markets to emerging markets and we have to cover this growing appetite with a multilateral expansion in the offer of our brands," VW Group design director Walter de' Silva told Automotive News Europe on the sidelines of the auto show here.

He said that one part of the expansion will be the addition of a smaller crossover below the compact VW Tiguan, which followed the large Touareg. The Tiguan and the Touareg where Europe's No. 1 sellers in their respective segments in the first half, according to data from market researcher JATO Dynamics. (See box, below)

VW doesn't have a small SUV/crossover, which was Europe's fast-growing segment in the first half with sales up 81 percent to 112,530 units. The Dacia Duster accounted for most of the segment's growth because of its near sixfold sales increase to 76,204 units.

VW also wants to launch crossovers with different looks, as previewed by the Cross Coupe concept the automaker unveiled at the Tokyo auto show last week.

"The Cross Coupe is not a preview of the next Tiguan – a vehicle which will keep more traditional proportions – but a first look at how we could lure different customers in the crossover segment," de' Silva said.

VW brand development chief Ulrich Hackenberg told Automotive News Europe in Tokyo last week that he would like to see the Cross Coupe launched in addition to the Tiguan to create a new niche.

De' Silva added that the company has not decided whether to make a coupe-SUV crossover like the Cross Coupe, but that such an architecture looks promising, especially in the world's largest market.

"China is no longer a sedan-only market and is showing a growing appetite for crossovers that we need to take into account in our next product decisions," the designer said.

New face of SUVs

VW says the Cross Coupe concept shows the new face of the brand's future SUVs. That face is dominated by a wide grille that integrates the xenon headlights and turn signals.

"We searched intensively for something original and unique," VW brand head of design Klaus Bischoff told Automotive News Europe about the look of the grille.

Bischoff, a co-leader of the team that created the concept with de' Silva, said the grille will be on a VW model in two to three years. That would coincide with the launch of the second-generation Tiguan.

The concept is a plug-in hybrid that gets its power from a 147-hp 1.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine combined with two electric motors, one mounted in the front and the other in the back. The combined power rating of the engine and electric motors is 261 hp, VW says.

Audi will make X6 rival, top executive says

Luca Ciferri - Automotive News Europe

BOLOGNA, Italy – Audi will launch a rival to the BMW X6 and may add a challenger to the Bavarian automaker's X4, a top Volkswagen executive told Automotive News Europe.

Walter de' Silva, design boss at Audi parent Volkswagen Group, confirmed that Audi has signed off on plans for the X6 rival. He declined to say when the car would arrive.

Dubbed by media as the Q6, the sporty, low-roof SUV-coupe crossover will fit between Audi's Q7 premium large SUV and Q5 premium medium SUV and try to win sales from BMW's niche-busting, hot-selling X6.

"We will definitely launch a sportier crossover in between the Q7 and Q5," de' Silva said on the sidelines of the auto show here.

Audi aims to pass BMW to be the top-selling premium brand by 2015.

BMW added the X6, which is based on the X5 premium large SUV, to its lineup in 2008. The X6 has helped BMW expand sales in the premium SUV segment, which is a small, high-margin niche where each BMW model has a starting price of more than 55,000 euros.

After nine months, the X5 was Europe's top-selling premium large SUV and the X6 ranked fifth, according to data from market researcher JATO Dynamics. (See box, below)

De' Silva also said that Audi is still deciding whether to add a smaller SUV, likely named the Q4, to fit between the Q5 and Q3. The new model would be a competitor against the X4, a model that BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has confirmed will be launched. Sources say BMW will start sales of the X4 in 2014.

Volkswagen Cross Coupé Concept Take Two at the Geneva Motor Show

The Geneva concept gets a two-tone red and silver exterior paint work but it's what's hiding under the hood that justifies its existence.

Whereas the Cross Coupé shown in Tokyo features a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid system the newer versions replaces the TSI gasoline engine with an even more frugal turbodiesel four-cylinder unit with direct injection.

The setup continues to use two electric motors, one at the front and the other at the back, but with the help of the TDI, its combined fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is 1.8 liters per 100 km (around 131mpg US or 157 mpg UK) with CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km.

Moreover, the system's combined output is up from 265PS (261hp) to 306PS (302hp) offering the 1,858kg (4,096 lbs) SUV a top speed of 220km/h (137mph).

There are no other mechanical or styling changes with the Cross Coupé designed to offer us a preview of what a sportier flavored variant of the Tiguan could look like.

I don't like. Rear lookslike the Porsche Macan. I really do not like that all three (VW, Audi, Porsche) are getting the same design style and lines both in and out.
