2014 Volkswagen Beetle Dune Concept first official images emerge

These are the first official images with the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle Dune Concept set to be exhibited starting Monday at the North American International Auto Show.

Several days ago Volkswagen previewed its revised Beetle Dune Concept by publishing some design sketches and now a couple of official pics have surfaced the web, prior to the concept's public debut scheduled for tomorrow and ahead of a rumored production model due in 2015.

The vehicle is an evolution of the 2000 Beetle Dune Concept featuring a similar rugged appearance with crossover cues such as the protective plates, flared wheel arches, beefy alloys and black moldings. Inside there's a handle where the glove box would normally be positioned while the cabin features several yellow accents.

Power is provided by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 210 HP (154 kW) sent to the wheels with help from a DSG six-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

More details will be disclosed tomorrow.

2014 Volkswagen Beetle Dune concept

Will cost 2,800 EUR more than the standard model
British magazine CAR is reporting Volkswagen will introduce a production version of the Beetle Dune concept in 2016.

Volkswagen's board apparently approved in June the Beetle Dune for an early 2016 release as a beefed up version of the regular model. The car's marketing chief Matthias Zauner says the Beetle Dune will be offered as a convertible as well and it is believed the pricing will increase by around 2,800 EUR compared to the equivalent Beetle.

Despite receiving an increased ride height and a beefed up body, the Beetle Dune will remain a two-wheel drive car and the differences compared to the regular Beetle will be "almost exclusively visual" according to Zauner.

Details about the engine lineup are not available at this point but most likely the car will get the Beetle’s higher-end motors. As a reminder, the concept came with a 2.0-liter rated at 210 PS (154 kW) working with a 6-speed dual-clutch DSG.

The Dune will allegedly be the first of many other Beetle spin-offs planned by Volkswagen as part of an entire sub-lineup.

Volkswagen has unveiled the 2016 Beetle Dune ahead of its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later today.

Previewed as the Dune concept, the production model draws inspiration from 'Baja Bugs' and features a sporty front fascia with honeycomb grille inserts and a faux aluminum skid plate. Moving further back, we can see polished aluminum side skirts, black wheel arch extensions and body side graphics. The model also has a new rear bumper, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and LED taillights. Other highlights include an increased ride height, a wider track and 18-inch Canyon-style wheels with all-season tires.

Customers can also order a Lighting Package that adds Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights and LED license plate lighting.

Moving on to the interior, buyers will find a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel and sport seats with orange contrast stitching. The car also has an MIB II infotainment system with a 6.3-inch display as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The model can also be equipped with a Technology Package that adds a Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control system, a Fender premium audio system, a KESSY keyless access system and a tilt-and-slide sunroof.

Power is provided by a 1.8-liter TSI four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 170 bhp (126 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. It is connected exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2016 Beetle Dune Coupe will go on sale early next year and it will be followed by a Beetle Dune Convertible.

VW Beetle Dune

Volkswagen presented the new Beetle Dune at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. The crossover model, which is reminiscent of the legendary Baja California dune buggies, is characterised by an eye-catching design with numerous off-road accents, large 18-inch wheels and a higher ride height. The Beetle Dune is making its debut as both a coupe and convertible, and it can be ordered beginning Thursday, 19 November 2015. Prices begin at 23,625 euros for the Coupe and 27,800 euros for the Cabriolet.

The new Beetle Dune is a completely redesigned model that invites adventure. Its powerful character is emphasised by a large central air inlet - with a silver frame - and a black honeycomb screen. In side profile, the black wheel well and body add-on extensions are eye-catching in conjunction with the lighter body colours. In addition, black side trim strips (stylised "Beetle running boards") and the "DUNE" badge underscore the dynamic image of the latest Beetle model. Its ground clearance was increased 10 millimetres to accentuate its all-terrain properties.

Three new elements define the rear body of the Beetle Dune: along with a large rear spoiler (top in glossy black, surfaces beneath in body colour) and newly designed bumper (with diffuser in "Reflex Silver"), the new LED rear lights create a futuristic night design. A total of nine different body colours are available for the Beetle Dune. New to the colour range are "Sandstorm Yellow Metallic" and "Dark Bronze Metallic." In addition, the Coupe may be ordered with the roof painted black. All of the Beetle Dune Cabriolet versions come with a black soft top. The trendy overall impression continues into the interior. Prominent elements include the Dash Pad (styling panel on the dashboard) painted in body colour and the extensive contrasting stitching on the sport seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel, parking brake grip, etc. In contrast, areas of the seat system, door trim panels, roof pillars and headlining are finished in black.

The Beetle Dune features the latest generation of Volkswagen infotainment systems, which - depending on the model - might be extended by adding a DAB+ digital radio receiver or a second Bluetooth phone interface. Voice control can be used to operate the radio, phone and access to connected media and - in the "Discover Media" system - the navigation functionality as well.

In conjunction with the "Composition Media" and "Discover Media" systems, Volkswagen is also offering an optional high-end sound system by US manufacturer Fender. The key component of this sound system is a 10-channel amplifier with Class A/B output amplifiers and 400 watts of output power (as well as woofers, tweeters, subwoofer, etc.).

In Europe, the new Beetle Dune is available with three turbocharged petrol engines and two turbodiesels. The petrol engines produce 77 kW / 105 PS, 110 kW /150 PS and 162 kW / 220 PS; the diesel engines develop 81 kW / 110 PS and 110 kW / 150 PS.
