Volkswagen Golf GTE Sport concept

Features gullwing doors
Volkswagen has staged the world debut of the Golf GTE Sport concept in Austria today at Wörthersee.

Joining the Golf GTI Clubsport and Golf GTI Performance at the annual GTI meeting, Volkswagen's new Golf GTE Sport concept represents an interesting take on the popular hatchback. It has very little in common with the production series Golf GTE plug-in hybrid as it comes with a massively reworked White Club body made from carbon fiber and equipped with gullwing doors.

As far as the interior is concerned, it has separate areas for the driver and passenger and is equipped with bucket seats featuring five-point belts. The steering column is made from carbon while the gearbox can be operated manually thanks to the shift paddles. Traditional dials have been replaced by high-tech transparent displays sitting one behind another to provide all the necessary information.

At its heart is a powerful plug-in hybrid system consisting of a front-mounted 1.6-liter TSI engine derived adapted from the Polo R WRC but in this configuration it delivers 299 PS (220 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It works together with two electric motors, one sitting at the front in the 6-speed DCT housing and developing 115 PS & 330 Nm while the other is at the back with 115 PS & 270 Nm. This gives the Golf GTE Sport concept a combined output of 400 PS (295 kW) and 670 Nm (495 lb-ft) of torque.

When the combustion engine and two electric motors join their power, the vehicle will sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.3 seconds before topping out at 174 mph (280 km/h). Despite the stellar performances, Volkswagen's Golf GTE Sport concept remains very frugal as fuel consumption in hybrid mode stands at only 2 liters / 100 km (117.6 mpg US or 141.2 mpg UK). It can also be driven solely on electric power for up to 50 km (31 miles) thanks to a lithium-ion battery.

Volkswagen T1 Race Taxi
Based on the VW T1
Coachbuilder Fred Bernhard has revealed the unique VW T1 Race Taxi for the 2015 GTI Meeting at Worthersee.

Based on an old Volkswagen T1, the vehicle uses an air-cooled engine from Porsche 993, equipped with two turbochargers and delivering 530 PS (390 kW) and 757 Nm (558 lb-ft) of torque. It is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, taken from a Porsche 996 GT3. The steering system and the brakes also come from the 993.

Riding on 18-inch BBS wheels, the T1 Race Taxi weighs only 1,500 kg (3,307lbs), thanks to the extensive use of details made of carbon fiber.

Bernhard explains it took him six years to build the machine. “For me it was a professional challenge. I wanted to find out the limit of what is possible,” he comments.

Volkswagen has unveiled the Golf GTI Dark Shine concept at Wörthersee 2015.

Created with the assistance of 13 apprentices from Wolfsburg and Sitech Sitztechnik, the one-off model is based on the Golf GTI Performance and features a Daytona Grey Metallic and R-Yellow Pearl exterior with handcrafted tailpipes.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as there's Recaro front sport seats, yellow contrast stitching and leather / Alcantara upholstery. The model also features an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, revised trim and yellow accents. There's also a 3,500 watt audio system - with eight speakers and three subwoofers - which can be controlled by a tablet.

Under the hood, the 2.0-liter TSI engine has been equipped with a new intercooler, an optimized ECU and a carbon fiber air box. Thanks to these modifications, the engine develops 395 PS (290 kW) and 487 Nm (359 lb-ft) of torque.

Volkswagen Golf Variant Biturbo Edition
Volkswagen has introduced the new Golf Variant Biturbo Edition at Wörthersee.

Built by 14 apprentices from Zwickau, the one-off model has an Alor Blue exterior with Deep Black pearl body stripes. The wagon also features a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system and five-spoke alloy wheels.

The two-tone theme continues in the cabin as there's black leather sports seats with blue bolsters. The model also has a leather-wrapped steering wheel, gloss black trim and a premium audio system. Other notable highlights include an extendable cargo deck and an airbrushed roof liner with a map of Saxony that highlights Volkswagen production sites in Chemnitz, Dresden and Zwickau.

Power is provided by a Passat-sourced 2.0-liter biturbo diesel engine that produces 240 PS (176 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a DSG transmission and a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system.

Volkswagen Golf R by ABT Sportsline
Power increased by 100 PS
ABT Sportsline has introduced a modified Volkswagen Golf R at the GTI Meeting in Wörthersee, Austria.

The all-wheel drive Golf R hot hatchback has received a rather flashy lime green body wrap to go with the hardware upgrades prepared by ABT. Most of the work was done underneath the hood where the four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine has been massaged to deliver an additional 100 PS (73 kW), thus bringing the grand total to 400 PS (294 kW). There's no word about the torque figure, but one of their previous Golf R project came with a 100 Nm (73 lb-ft) bump to 480 Nm (74 lb-ft).

Aside from the power boost and striking wrap, this particular VW Golf R has received the tuner's 20-inch set of ABT-FR wheels, along with headlight covers, custom front grille, redesigned side skirts and a carbon-like wrap on the mirrors. At the back resides a glossy black diffuser and quad 102mm (four inches) exhaust tips featuring a black chrome-plated finish.

So if we inflate it. The Golf 8?

Very much doubt that.

However, the pronounced slope of the hood and the low & wide grill incorporating shallow headlamps will be a reoccuring theme on VW sedans, Variants and coupes. The recently introduced EU Passat is a good indication of what can be expected. As are the C Coupe GTE large sedan and GTE (CC successor) concepts.
