Vinfast launches Lux A2.0 saloon and Lux AS2.0 SUV | Autocar

Vinfast’s outside engineering contractors include Pininfarina, Bosch, Magna and Siemens. Fisher said that the two outgoing BMW platforms used for the flagship models have been modified by Vinfast to “future-proof” them and make it possible to meet all global regulations. He said modifications were made for improved pedestrian and side-impact protection. Vinfast also re-engineered some of the BMW production technology used to assemble the structure.

BMW Brilliance Joint Venture sub brand known as Zinoro.

Fully EV model called the Zinoro 1E (designation M12) based on the E84 X1

This has been replaced by the Zinoro 60H (M13) based on the F48 X1, and is now a hybrid rather than full EV.

Yes in China you can get the X1eDrive iPerformance also. We finally get it with the X1LCi.

Yes I had a good look around after the Beckham circus had left. Nice cars but the stigma behind the manufacturer might be the stumbling block.
But it has the most polite and direct navigation ever. Telling me it loved me big time 4ever. :D

What is or are the reasons why Zinoro did not take off ?? something that was raised very well done and was for me a clearly an elegant BMW formula to enter the world mass market, for example here in Latin America the Chevrolet Sail and the Kia Rio (googeled) are the best sellers in certain countries (yes, the automotive landscape is sometimes boring here).

For that reason it is the ideal scenario or breeding ground for what is happening:
Chinese brands invaded and there are dozens of them and dozens of dealers, in some countries are the best sellers and are well marketed and positioned as in Latin America there is a lot of human talent in those areas, besides, the Chinese cars are cheap and have no problems for enter here because of the weak regulations regarding safety, collisions etc.

In any case, I was waiting for "ZINORO", because knowing that BMW is a pioneer in seeing these opportunities, but never came and completely forget about it, (I thought they had broken or failed) why do not export or play to the world where the Chinese are already dominating??, they even renewed the car, and here there are 100 Chinese brands but this Brillance is not

The 1E, was not a good car from what I can tell, out dated battery tech, and poor figures. IIRC it was not even available for sale, only lease, and numbers were fairly limited anyway. The 60H seems like an upgrade, but I suspect Zinoro was simply an exercise in meeting some kind of requirements to have non-domestic manufacturers contributing to EV tech of local manufacturers - though I have nothing to back up that supposition.

Honestly, it makes no sense for BMW to want to be seen having much to do with it, and Brilliance seem to have a total shotgun approach to their model strategy and brand portfolio. I gave up researching it a while ago because it just appears to be such a mess... though I'm sure that's because I'm not surfing the Chinese web, and of course, I don't read the language.

Brilliance also have JV's with other manufacturers, the fruits of which are the Jinbei and Huasong brands. BMW will have another JV with Great Wall Motors, to produce the Electric mini, Great Wall already have the Haval sub brand for SUV's - who knows if BMW GWM JV will create another Zinoro-esque sub-brand.

Looks very interesting and hope this brand succeed at least in Vietnam first and then the outside world. First 2 models based on outgoing F10 5 series platform and X5 platform so should drive very well. Italdesign and Pininfarina have done the styling and CEO and design boss are ex GM workers so if they all done their home work the cars will drive well although not sure how good the build quality is.

Vietnam is getting into the vehicle manufacturing business with its own brand. Called Vinfast, the first two products from the newly established car company include a mid-size sedan and SUV, and they were presented to the public for the first time on Tuesday at the 2018 Paris auto show.

But rather than develop its own models, Vinfast has chosen to rebody existing cars for its first two products, in this case the previous-generation BMW 5-Series and X5. Vinfast has called its versions the Lux A2.0 and Lux SA2.0, respectively.

Italian design firms Italdesign and Pininfarina were hired to devise the new look for both the exterior and interiors of the vehicles, working closely with Vinfast design boss David Lyon. Lyon is a former General Motors staffer, as is Vinfast CEO Jim DeLuca.

In an interesting move, Vinfast gave the people of Vietnam the opportunity to determine the styling direction at the very start of the design process. More than 62,000 people voted when presented with 20 design sketches. Starting with Italdesign’s winning concepts, the cars’ designs were then further developed and completed by Pininfarina.

Just one powertrain will be available at launch, though two outputs will be offered. The powertrain is a BMW-designed 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that Vinfast will build under license, and it will offer outputs of 174 and 228 horsepower. In each case, the engine will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Both vehicles will come with rear-wheel drive as standard but the Lux SA2.0 will offer all-wheel drive as an option. Vinfast quotes a 0-62 mph time of 7.1 seconds for the Lux A2.0 and a time of 7.3 seconds for the Lux SA2.0 with rear-wheel drive, when the vehicles feature the 228-hp output.

Production of Vinfast cars will take place at a plant under construction in Hai Phong, in Vietnam's north. Vinfast will start local sales of the Lux A2.0 and Lux SA2.0 in June 2019 and plans to follow up the cars with additional models, including electric cars and buses and commercial vehicles. The brand says it will eventually start exports but hasn't mentioned any markets.

Vinfast is a subsidiary of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, which specializes in construction and real estate development but is also involved in agriculture, healthcare, retail, tourism and numerous other sectors. Now we can add vehicle manufacturing to the list.
