Mazda launched the electric EZ-6 saloon the recent Beijing Motor Show in Apr 2024. It initially was only to be offered for the Chinese market but new indications are that this car will be launched in Europe as well.
Personally I think its a very attractive replacement for the aging 6 model and in China will be sold as either a BEV or PHEV.
Mazda has already shown the EZ-6 electric sedan for China, and now the Japanese could also come to Germany. The info!
At the end of April 2024, the EZ-6 was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show. The Japanese initially announced that they would sell the sedan exclusively on the Chinese market. Now, however, Mazda has undergone a change of heart and will now offer the electrified sedan as a global model.
Mazda said the EZ-6 will launch in the fall of 2024, initially in the Chinese and European markets. The Japanese brand has not specified exactly which European countries it is serving, nor has it confirmed availability outside of China and Europe. It is not yet known whether the sedan will also come to Germany, but it is conceivable.
Platform suitable for electric and hybrid vehicles
The Mazda EZ-6 uses the EPA1 platform, a Chinese electric sedan produced by Mazda's joint venture partner Changan. The platform is mainly designed for electric cars, but according to Mazda, it is also offered with a plug-in hybrid.
A continuous light strip with round taillights adorns the rear of the EZ-6.
We know that Mazda will sell the EZ-6 with both powertrains in China, but it remains unclear whether the plug-in hybrid will be offered in other markets such as Europe. The electric model is said to deliver a range of about 600 kilometers, while the plug-in version is said to get over 1000 kilometers on just one tank of fuel.
Two power levels up to 255 hp possible
Official performance details were not published. However, it can be assumed that the EZ-6 will have very similar specifications to the Chinese Deepal SL03, with which it shares the base.
Untypical for Mazda, the tidy interior is without buttons, but there are large displays.
This means that EV models could be offered with 58.9 kWh and 66.8 kWh battery packs. The basic electric motor would produce 215 hp (160 kW) and 320 Nm of torque, while a powerful version would produce 255 hp and 320 Nm.
Mazda’s European research and development centre experts have already been in China and have “dynamic performance tuning and validation of the MAZDA EZ-6 at the Chongqing Automobile Testing Grounds,” according to Mazda. Whether there are any Europe-specific changes to the chassis or drive hardware, or whether the China version has been validated for Europe, is not mentioned. Mazda emphasises that it has “leveraged its extensive expertise in dynamic performance tuning from the gasoline vehicle era” to increase the driving pleasure of the EZ-6.
Changan contributes not only the EPA-1 platform, but also the driving assistants. The EZ-6 is to be equipped with a level 2.5 semi-autonomous driving system. The system utilises a 7nm Qualcomm SA8155P chip, four high-resolution panoramic cameras and twelve high-performance ultrasonic radars.
The Mazda EZ-6 is 4.92 metres long, 1.89 metres wide without wing mirrors and 1.49 metres high. Its wheelbase is 2.99 metres. In the design of the saloon, Mazda has opted for continuity with the combustion models: The EZ-6 has a black but closed ‘radiator grille’ at the front, giving the saloon a combustion engine-like appearance.
The car has a very sleek and elegant exterior design, personally I like it very much.
The interior design looks very luxurious and upmarket. The quilted leather material looks classy and is on the door panels and makes the seats look very comfortable.
